From 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on November 23, Xu Decheng, member of the Party Group and Deputy Director of the Foreign Affairs Office (Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office) of Zhenjiang Municipal People's Government and Executive Vice President (and Secretary-general) of Zhenjiang People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, gave an academic lecture entitled "A Foreign Affairs Worker's Thoughts on Japanese Learning and Japan-related Work" in Room 201 of the Main Building. Over 100 faculty and students of the School of Foreign Languages attended the lecture. Prof. Quan Xiaojing, Deputy Dean of Japanese Department, presided over the lecture.
Director Xu Decheng's lecture covered three main aspects: the history of friendly exchanges between Zhenjiang and Japan, his reflections on years’ Japan-related work, and his sharing of Japanese learning experiences. Taking Zhenjiang's Sanshan culture and the rise of the strawberry industry in Jurong as examples, Director Xu gave a detailed account of the history of the friendly exchanges between Zhenjiang and Japan and new achievements today. He recounted his own experiences of working with Japanese people and stressed the responsibilities of foreign affairs workers and the lessons learnt. He taught the students to cherish their precious college life by studying hard, thinking more, and practising more so as to become upright Chinese.
The lecture aroused the students and teachers' interest in research on Zhenjiang's splendid local culture, and acquainted them with the special nature and contents of foreign affairs work, thus enlightening them on how to tell Chinese stories and local stories in Japanese in the future. At the end of the lecture, the students asked many questions, to which Director Xu patiently gave answers. The teachers and students present were very impressed and expressed that the lecture had further broadened their research horizons and aroused their academic interest in conducting research on Sino-Japan friendly exchanges as well as the local culture in Zhenjiang. The lecture was successfully concluded with warm applause.
