Introduction of SFL
In 2001, the former Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, Zhenjiang Medical College, and Zhenjiang Teachers College were merged to form Jiangsu University, and in the same year, the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) was founded. The SFL currently has 5 undergraduate majors: English, English (Teacher Education), English (Mutual Recognition of Credits between China and the United States), Japanese, and Linguistics. It has one master's degree program in the first-level discipline of Foreign Language & Literature and one professional master's degree program of MTI (Master of Translation and Interpreting). The English major is a national first-class major (under construction), and the course "College English" is one of the first national first-class courses and the first batch of curriculum-based ideological and political education demonstration courses in Jiangsu Province. In the SFL, there are 6 teaching departments: English Department, Japanese Department, European Languages Department, College English (Basic) Department, College English (Advanced ) Department, and Postgraduate English Department; 5 management and teaching support centers: Foreign Language Learning Center (a university-level central laboratory ), MTI Education Center, Teacher Development and Teaching Quality Evaluation Center, Students Academic Competition Guidance Center, and Jiangsu University---Austria Karl Franz Gratz University Chinese /German Language and Culture Center.
The SFL has a strong faculty, including 12 professors (researcher professors), 50 associate professors, 33 teachers with doctoral degrees, 1 winner of Excellent Youth Foundation of Jiangsu Province's Social Sciences, 2 "Teaching Masters (under cultivation)" in Jiangsu University, 1 young academic leader (under cultivation) in Jiangsu University, 1 "Top Ten Teacher" in Zhenjiang City, and 13 "Most Popular Top Ten Teachers" in Jiangsu University. Jinshan Scholar Xu Bu is currently a member of the Strategic Advisory Committee for the Construction of an Autonomous Knowledge System for Philosophy and Social Sciences in Higher Education Institutions under the Ministry of Education, a member of the Advisory Committee of the Institute of International Strategic Studies at Peking University, a member of the Decision-Making Advisory Committee of the Shandong Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government, a vice chairman of the Academic Committee of the South China Sea Institute, a member of the High-Level Advisory Committee to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, a member of the Political Science Expert Group of the Expert Committee for Philosophy and Social Sciences in Higher Education Institutions under the National Textbook Committee, and a member of the Expert Group of the Office of the Central Leading Group for Cyberspace Affairs.
The Institute of Global Development and Security, Institute of Asia-Pacific Country and Region Studies, China-ASEAN Relationship Study Center, International Learned Institute of Argumentation Studies, Jiangsu University Research Institute of Discourse, Argumentation and Global Communication, Jiangsu University Corpus Translation Teaching and Research Center, Pearl S. Buck Research Center of Jiangsu University, Institute of Foreign Language Education and Teaching, Center for Cross-Cultural Communication Research, and Center for Modern Japan Studies are affiliated to the SFL.
The teachers in the SFL have won the special prizes and first prizes in the provincial and national finals of the FLTRP Star Teacher Contest and the SFLEP National Foreign Language Teaching Contest. The students' scores of National Tests for English Majors Grade Four and Eight (TEM4, TEM 8), and the National College English Test Band 4 and Band 6 (CET4, CET 6) are among the top in similar universities in China. Graduates are generally popular to the employers for their solid basic skills, strong language practice ability, comprehensive professional qualities, and practical work ethic. In recent years, the overall employment rate of the SFL's graduates has exceeded 95%, and the high-quality employment rate of undergraduate graduates has reached 40%. Many graduates have been admitted to prestigious universities at home and abroad, such as Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, Zhejiang University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Tongji University, National University of Singapore, University of Hong Kong, King's College London, University of Edinburgh, McGill University, Columbia University, and University of Sydney. Japanese major students can go to many universities in Japan for exchange study during their undergraduate studies. The reform of postgraduate English teaching is at the forefront of universities in Jiangsu province. We have won 1 second prize of Jiangsu Province Teaching Achievement Award, 1 first prize of Jiangsu Province Postgraduate Teaching Mode Reform Achievement, 1 Jiangsu Province Excellent Graduate Textbook, 1 Jiangsu Province Excellent Graduate Course, 1 Jiangsu Province Postgraduate Course Ideological and Political Education Demonstration Course, and 1 Jiangsu Province High-quality Teaching Resource. In the past five years, the SFL has been granted 10 national research projects of social sciences, and 2 international research projects (each funded by 200,000 yuan RMB). We have published 30 papers in SSCI, A&HCI and foreign language CSSCI journals, and has published 15 monographs and translations.
The faculty are working hard to build the SFL into a teaching and research-oriented school with distinctive academic characteristics and excellent teaching quality. (Updated on April 2, 2024)
