On July 6, Professor Yang Jincai, the former Dean and PhD Supervisor of the School of Foreign Languages, Nanjing University, visited and offered guidance to the School of Foreign Languages. The meeting was presided over by SFL Dean Li Chongyue. SFL leaders like Party Committee Secretary Xie Zhifang, Deputy Dean Zhang Lin, Deputy Dean Wu Peng were present at the meeting, together with heads of the School departments and a number of professors and PhDs.
At the meeting, Dean Li Chongyue first briefed the professional development and discipline construction of the School. Professor Yang fully affirmed the great achievements that has been made by the School in discipline construction and professional development, congratulated the School on its being ranked among the National First-class Undergraduate Construction Programs. He encouraged the School faculty to take the approval as a new starting point and to further promote the high-quality development of discipline construction.
At the follow-up seminar, Professor Yang offered important guidance to the School development. To begin with, he emphasized that the sustainable development of the faculty is the cornerstone of professional and disciplinary development, so the School should provide a good platform for the faculty, making effort to reinforce team and echelon construction. Then Professor Yang encouraged the faculty to accomplish the requirements of the new era on teaching reform by promoting curriculum construction and creating first-class online, hybrid and offline courses. After that, Professor Yang pointed out two important tasks for university teachers: On the one hand, they should strengthen talent training, encourage students to participate in academic competitions, and track the latest development of outstanding graduates; on the other hand, teachers may explore and find research topics in teaching practice, take initiative to apply for research projects, and publish papers and textbooks, so as to promote the integration of teaching and research. In addition, Professor Yang proposed that the integration of professional development and local culture is particularly important. Here he urged teachers to tap local resources, offer services to the local area, and try to build courses with the characteristics of their own university and local area. Last but not the least, Professor Yang suggested promoting the comprehensive professional construction and discipline development from the seven aspects of “university, school, faculty, students, journals and academia”. The participants of the seminar from the teaching departments of the School discussed with Professor Yang on issues concerned. They were greatly encouraged and benefited a lot from the seminar.
Towards the end of the seminar, Dean Li extended thanks to Professor Yang for his insightful suggestions for the professional development of the School.
