On June 12, 2022 Jiangsu finals of FLTRP “Star Teacher” Contest concluded after 5-hour fierce rivalry in Jiangsu Meeting Center. Both the Team of College English Faculty and the Team of English Major Faculty of the School of Foreign Languages, Jiangsu University that comprise a total of 10 teachers won prizes. The Team of College English Faculty (Wu Aihui, Wang Linzhi, Mao Weiqiang, Li Xia and Ju Xiaoli) won a special prize of Jiangsu finals (runner-up), thus promoted to the national semifinals. The of English Major Faculty (Mao Yanfeng, Chen Chaoying, Yan Linqiong, Ma Fenghua and Yuan Qionghua) won a second prize, the best result in history as well.
The theme of the “Star Teacher” Competition this year is “The effective use of foreign language teaching materials: Integrating ideology with science. The main objective is to guide teachers to fully recognize the important role of teaching materials in moral education, to mine the ideological contents in the textbooks, and to encourage them to fully understand the textbook design, formulate scientific and appropriate teaching plans in accordance with the learning situation. Meanwhile, it is intended to help faculty members to form cooperative teams, to pool their intelligence and energy, and to jointly explore the effective use of teaching materials and the profound integration of language and educational objective. During the three rounds of competition that lasted for three months, based on the argumentation theory the Team of College English Faculty endeavored to dig out the elements concerning political and ideological education in the textbooks, employed the product-oriented approach, and fully demonstrated a model class of quality College English instruction that combines the objectives of enhancing the language ability, promoting the critical thinking capability and improving the quality of political and ideological education. The Team of English Major Faculty merged the theory of intercultural communication with logic/argumentation theory, highlighted the complex issue of “cultural bias”, tried to construct the real situation of intercultural communication in the limited space of classroom instruction, and fully demonstrated the great significance inherent in the conception of a community with shared future for mankind through multiple means of interaction between teacher and students and that among students. The lectures of both teams were well acclaimed by the panelists for their meticulous design and skillful delivery of lecture contents.
The FLTRP “Star Teacher” Contest is jointly hosted by the Center for China Foreign Language and Education Research at Beijing Foreign Studies University, the Center for China Foreign Language Teaching Materials Research at Beijing Foreign Studies University, the Branch of Multilingual Education Development at the National Basic Foreign Language Education Research and Training Center, and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. It is widely recognized in the circles of college foreign language education in China and consecutively ranks among the data sources of Report on the Faculty Teaching Contests of National Common College and Universities under the “Research on the Contest Evaluation and Administration System of Colleges and Universities” issued by China Association for Higher Education. It is currently the most influential English teaching contest in China. Thanks to their varied but unique teaching styles, the two teams from Jiangsu University succeeded in demonstrating the grace of the English teachers of the University and further promoted the fame and reputation of the English teaching of the University.
