At 2:00 p.m. on October 21, 2022, Professor Yang Ling, Dean of the School of Japanese Studies, Beijing International Studies University, visited delivered an online lecture entitled “Sustainable development of foreign language major and sustainable growth of foreign language talents -- role of translation teaching in foreign language talent cultivation”. School of Foreign Languages Japanese Department Dean Zhou Rong presided over the lecture. School of Foreign Languages Professor Li Chongyue delivered a welcome speech. Faculty and students of the Japanese Department listened to the lecture and participated in the post-lecture seminar.
In her lecture, Professor Yang Ling pointed out that “translatology” and “area and international studies” have been officially ranked among the subject of the first category against the backdrop of new liberal arts. According to Yang, the Discipline of Foreign Languages and Literatures is faced with the challenges of “complex multi-linguistic cultivation” and “interdisciplinary studies and converging of multiple disciplines” posed by the new development of foreign languages discipline. The existing advantages and characteristics of the foreign language talent training have never been so important. Taking translation teaching in foreign language talent training as an example, Professor Yang Ling proposed that adherence to the cultivation of the core competence of foreign language as well as the cultivation of the core competence of translation is the key driving force that will promote the sustainable development of foreign language majors and talent training. And the teaching of translation should be conducted on the basis of language skills, complete with encyclopedic knowledge, and a translator should possess professional quality and translation ability so as to carry out intercultural communication. Meanwhile, the interpreting is an important part of translation focusing on instantaneity and that branch into different categories according to the occasion, the purpose of information transmission, the direction of translation, etc. Towards the end of her lecture, Yang the speaker highlighted the relationship between language and translation skills in translation learning, the relationship between translation skills and encyclopedic knowledge, and the relationship between classroom instruction and self-regulated learning.
The lecture taught the audience a lot, who said that through this lecture, they got a more comprehensive understanding of translation, especially interpreting and self-regulated learning. The lecture further activated the students’ interest in foreign language learning, encouraging them to learn foreign language better in future. Professor Yang’s also shed light on those students puzzled by the Japanese learning, especially their study of translation. It is believed that the after the lecture students will seriously reflect on where they started and where to go in foreign language learning.
