From 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on October 20, 2022, Professor Chen Shihua, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Literature, Nanjing Tech University, gave a lecture entitled “Foreign language major construction: Predicaments and solutions” to the faculty and students of the School of Foreign Languages, Jiangsu University in the Conference Room 513 of the Main Building. School of Foreign Languages Dean Professor Li Chongyue presided over the lecture. More than 40 administrative leaders, key teachers, and graduate students of the School of Foreign Languages attended the lecture.
Professor Chen Shihua introduced the discipline construction and professional development of the School of Foreign Languages and Literature of Nanjing Tech University. His lecture was vested in the characteristics of foreign languages specialty and the situation of current development, in view of the gist of the National Social Science Fund of China in recent years. He focused on how to fix the orientations of a Foreign Language Program in accordance with the National Standards and how to attain the objective of the faculty’s self-development in view of the new difficulties confronting the construction of foreign languages specialty, the core competitiveness of the major, ways to make breakthroughs in the major construction, the enrollment and employment of the Foreign Language Program, etc. Chen’s lecture hits the right nail on the head and is rich in content, covering issues like professional construction, discipline development, academic research, the faculty’s self-development, student training, and School and Department governance. The lecture provides useful reference to the SFL in carrying out all the tasks mentioned above. The atmosphere was enlivened by the witty and humorous diction of Professor Chen and his active interaction with the audience. A number of teachers continued to ask him for suggestions on questions concerning their personal teaching and research after the lecture was officially concluded.
Professor Chen Shihua is currently Third-tier Professor and PhD Supervisor, and Dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Literature, Nanjing Tech University. He serves as a correspondence reviewer of the National Social Science Fund of China, an editorial board member of Journal of Nanjing Tech University (Philosophy and Social Sciences Edition), and Executive Director of the China Association for Japanese Literature Studies. Chen is also Pace-setter of the National First-class Undergraduate Construction Program (Japanese), the Jiangsu Provincial First-class Undergraduate Construction Program (TCSOL), and the Key Discipline (Foreign Languages and Literatures) of “14th Five-year Plan” of Jiangsu Province. From 2013 to 2016, he served as a diplomat of the Chinese Embassy in Japan.
Currently Professor Chen heads a key project of the National Social Science Fund in 2020 entitled “Research on the Japanese Literature Themed at 'Nursing' and Senility”, and a major project of the Philosophy and Social Science Fund for Colleges and Universities in Jiangsu Province in 2020 entitled “Research on Japanese 'Marine Literature' and Marine Education”. The projects Chen has headed and completed include the 2014 National Social Science Fund project entitled “Research on the Discrimination in Japan against Ryukyu in Modern Times, which was ranked among the “Excellent” category; the 2018 Jiangsu Postgraduate Education Reform project entitled “Reform on Foreign Language Teaching of Postgraduates Based on the Construction of External Discourse System”, which was ranked among the “Excellent” category; 2 projects sponsored by the Jiangsu Social Science Fund. Moreover, Chen has published more than 60 papers in key journals like Foreign Literature Studies, Contemporary Foreign Literature, Foreign Literature, etc., as well as 1 monograph, 1 translated book and 2 textbooks.
