Days ago, A Guide to College English Ideological and Political Education (ISBN 978-7-5213-2000-8) was officially published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, one of the most authoritative foreign language education presses in China. The course is compiled by Jiangsu University School of Foreign Languages Professor Wu Peng (editor in chief), together with Xu Huixia and Ji Lijun. Jiangsu University Vice President Professor Chen Hong is the reviewer. Four outstanding key College English teachers and course managers from Jiangsu University, that is Wu Yuanyuan, Ni Xiaoyan, Li Rui, and Zhu Xiaoyu participated in the book writing. This course is the first College English textbook in China that integrates ideological and political education into course guidance. It is also one of the key college textbooks promoted by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press this year. The copies for its first version add up to nearly 80000.
A Guide to College English Ideological and Political Education is aimed at providing “freshmen guidance” most easily ignored in College English teaching. By freshmen guidance, teachers should acquaint college students with the overall learning plan, contents, methods and strategies in the coming four years the first time they enter the university. In order to help College English teachers across the country to do a good job in this teaching process, to help students button “the first button of their lives” properly, the course expounds the mission of the times for College English in view of the fundamental talk of cultivating talents through moral education, deeply excavates the educational connotation of College English, and strives to let students get a clear idea about their learning objectives, develop a correct learning attitude, grasp effective learning methods, make good use of rich learning resources, and achieve solid learning results. Compared with other College English courses of all kinds in China, the Guide further clarifies the idea that the objectives of College English courses should not be limited to inculcating the English language knowledge to students and cultivating their language skills, but they should also include expanding the international vision and world view of students, guiding them to cultivate patriotic feelings, to strengthen their ideals and beliefs, to improve their outlook on life, world outlook and values, and to promote their moral standards. The book consists of four parts: “Why to learn College English”, “What to learn in College English”, “How to learn College English well” and “The Arena of College English”, which are further divided into 47 learning sections. The course is attached with micro lectures elaborately produced by the authors.
The planning and fundamental data collection for the course lasted for 2 years, and it took a whole year for it to be completed. Throughout the course, the authors have received care and concern from the Party and administrative leadership both at the University and the School level. The successful publication of the course marks another landmark achievement in the ideological and political construction of College English courses in Jiangsu University, which lays a good foundation for further deepening the construction work and further expanding the national demonstration effect.
