On August 2, Jiangsu University School of Foreign Languages Deputy Dean Wang Peng delivered a lecture entitled “Construct a College English course with concern, thought and affection” at “Yangtse River Delta Colleges and Universities Foreign Language Course Ideological and Political Teaching Reform and Innovation Workshop”. The workshop is jointly sponsored by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, Jiangsu Higher Education Association for Foreign Language Teaching and Research, Anhui Society for Foreign Language and Literature and the Branch Committee for College Foreign Languages under Zhejiang Higher Education Association. The participants are mainly from the foreign language teaching departments of undergraduate colleges and universities and higher vocational colleges in the Yangtze River Delta region, where they are either key teachers of College Foreign Languages or deputy deans of related departments or schools in charge of the teaching work.
Wu’s lecture focuses on three things, that is “What does the ideological and political construction mean to College English curriculum”, “What will College English be like after the course ideological and political construction” and “Reflection on the three-year practice of Jiangsu University and our prospect”. In his lecture Wu Peng makes a comprehensive summary on the accumulated successful experiences and shortcomings of the course ideological and political construction of Jiangsu University, highlighting the ways and means of carrying out systematic reform of College English curriculum by further promoting the course ideological and political construction, of solving the many existing problems that require to be tackled in the curriculum, such as lack of concern for real life issues in the teaching content, students’ deficiency in international communication capability, and lack of critical discussion capability. He stressed that the first step to take in the ideological and political construction of College English curriculum is to give a good guidance lecture for freshmen, so as to teach them how to properly button “the first button of their lives” immediately they learn College English.
Jiangsu Higher Education Association Director Ding Xiaochang, Jiangsu Higher Education Association for Foreign Language Teaching and Research Director Wang Haixiao, Anhui Society for Foreign Language and Literature Director Zhu Yue, and Jiangsu Higher Education Department Higher Education Director Shao Jin attended the seminar and each delivered a speech. Other lecturers include Zhang Zhiqiang, former Party Committee Secretary of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Yang Jincai at Nanjing University, Tian Chaoxia at Nanjing Normal University and Zhao Dequan at Shanghai Electric Power University. In his summary report, Li Xiaoxiang, Deputy Director of Jiangsu Higher Education Association for Foreign Language Teaching and Research, sang a high praise for the ideological and political construction of College English curriculum in Jiangsu University, saying that in the current curriculum reform, Jiangsu University has been in the forefront of the whole province, even the whole country with its remarkable achievements.
