From August 18-19, the 2020 FLTRP “Star Teacher” Contest held its national semifinals. The FLTRP “Star Teacher” Contest is jointly undertaken by the Supervisory Committee for College Foreign Language Teaching under the Ministry of Education, the Branch Supervisory Committee for the Teaching of English Majors under the Ministry of Education, and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. The Jiangsu University College English Teaching Team (comprising Zhang Yu, Huang Yadan, Pan Xiujie, Ji Lijun and Xu Huixia) won a special award again pursuant to their award in July contest. This is a breakthrough in the history of JSU team.
The topic for this year’s “Star Teacher” Contest is “A foreign language course and its teaching design that combines language teaching with educating people”. It is aimed at fully implementing the Party’s educational policy, implementing the fundamental task of moral education, and giving full play to the educational function of foreign language courses. A total of 104 teams participated in the national semi-finals, which were broadcast live online. 33000 viewers watched the competition online on August 18. The competition includes such core links as teaching design concept, classroom instruction demonstration, and on-site question and answer. Based on the discipline feature and talent training objectives of Jiangsu University, the team members made a profound reflection on the preliminary experiences of ideological and political construction of College English courses, exploited the ideological and political education elements in the kernel teaching materials, strove to integrate the education objectives into the whole teaching process and all links, and made an innovative use of the argumentation theory and critical discussion methods to upscale the teaching difficulty and promote the teaching effectiveness. The overall teaching design and teaching practice of theirs embodies both the organic integration of language teaching and moral education and the theoretical innovation of teaching methods. In the process of preparing for the competition that lasted for four months, the team members held dozens of discussions and trial lectures to elaborately polish every detail. They handled their lectures calmly and stably in each round of competition, showing solid professional quality, excellent teaching strength and excellent cooperative ability. In the semi-finals, they finally won the unanimous praise of panelists and defeated their competitors with overwhelming advantages.
The “Star Teacher” Contest is a large-scale and high-level authoritative competition in the field of foreign language education in Chinese colleges and universities. As one of the important parameters for various educational evaluations in China, it is ranked among National Class A teacher’s teaching competitions by Jiangsu University. Great attention has been paid to the contest by the Teaching Affairs Office of the University and the School of Foreign Languages. The abundant resources allocated for it laid a good foundation for the final success of the team. It once again highlights the exemplary and leading position in the whole country of the ideological and political construction of foreign language courses of Jiangsu University.
