In order to guarantee that UJS undergraduates may “take online courses at home”, and to implement the “Notice of UJS on conducting the undergraduate course teaching of the spring semester during the postponed period of time”, the School of Foreign Languages mobilized the whole faculty to make a detailed investigation of the foreign language courses to be offered this coming semester to all UJS students. In accordance with the course features, teaching requirements and student distribution, and considering the characteristics of various national online course portals and interactive teaching apps recommended by the University, each faculty member formulated an online teaching plan, prepared course resources and set the assessment requirements for all foreign language courses of the University during the period of time before the new semester officially started
On February 7, according to the unified deployment of the School administration and the School Party Committee, Deputy Dean Wu Peng convened an online meeting for deans/deputy deans and directors/deputy directors of all undergraduate departments (centers) to conduct discussions on how to formulate the teaching plans for this special period of time. He set some guiding principles for the online teaching of foreign language courses to be offered: “Four Non-stops” (non-stop learning, non-stop teaching, non-stop teaching management, and non-stop researching activities”, “Four Beneficials” (beneficial to all students, beneficial to professional development of the faculty, beneficial to first-class course construction, and beneficial to major construction), “Four Benchmarks” (benchmark of political stance, benchmark of teaching quality, benchmark of teaching documents, and benchmark of teaching satisfaction) and “One High Attention” (High attention to the teaching safety and stability). At the meeting the conferees also exchanged their ideas on the wide range of questions raised by the faculty members concerning the online teaching between February 1 and 6. They agreed on making greater efforts of coordination, giving more energetic instructions, and doing ever more careful preparations so that the online teaching might be carried out smoothly and successfully. They pledged to do their contributions to the epidemic prevention and control as well as the undergraduate teaching during the epidemic time for the School and the University at large.
From February 10 to 12, the School appointed Yao Wei, a core faculty member of the English Department and head of one of the University’s first-class courses, to give a videoed demo lecture based on her experiences accumulated over years to answer the questions raised by faculty members about the online teaching. Besides giving detailed explanations to the knacks for the use of interactive online platforms and related apps, Ms. Yao also answered the varied questions raised by the audience on QQ the day after the videoed lecture went public. Through the arduous efforts made by all, the faculty now mastered the basic skills for online teaching.
Before the official opening of the semester online, all the School departments in charge of teaching would continue to improve their work in accordance with the latest notices issued by the University and its teaching offices, making a full investigation into each course and the resources available, issuing demo lessons on online teaching to the whole faculty and trying to solve any problem concerning the online teaching and learning at the earliest time.
