In the face of the current severe situation of epidemic prevention and control, the School of Foreign Languages made resolute efforts to implement the call of the Ministry of Education to “conduct online teaching and learning at home” in view of the epidemic prevention and control and the University’s deployment of various kinds on the epidemic prevention and control. While attaching great importance to the epidemic prevention and control and observing all the regulations and requirements concerning the epidemic prevention and control, the whole School made a comprehensive plan on and offered detailed guidance to postgraduate teaching to ensure the smooth and orderly work of postgraduate teaching during the epidemic prevention and control period.
I. Resolutely fulfill the University’s unified deployment and do solid work all the time
According to the unified deployment of the national, the provincial and the local government, the University decided to postpone the start of the spring semester of 2020 for two weeks, and no graduate students shall be allowed to return to school before February 22 (postponed again to an indefinite date later). During this period, the SFL transmitted every notice of the University to all faculty members and students concerned at the earliest time to ensure the orderly progress of all work: 1) Students are required each day to report their health status truthfully as required, not to go out or attend a gathering, to just stay at home, and take the initiative to do some beneficial activities, such as doing learning and scientific research, accompanying their parents and other family members, and doing some physical exercises; 2) In response to the Reader Service Program entitled “Conducting reading and research with free access to CNKI during the epidemic time” jointly launched by the Graduate School and the CNKI, the SFL actively promoted and publicized the program, so as to ensure that the postgraduates’ literature reading and research might not be affected by the epidemic; 3) The SFL conducted the “Survey of the Home Internet Service of UJS Graduate Students” and “Questionnaire on the Peer Review of Postgraduates’ Degree Papers and the Degree-granting Work of Jiangsu University” according to the University’s deployment, for the purpose of getting to know the availability of home internet service of UJS graduate students during the epidemic period and the progress of their degree paper writing at home, as well as providing solutions to the problems confronting the graduate students at present.
II. Reinforce the supervisors’ consciousness of responsibility and ensure the smooth progress of postgraduate mentoring
In the special period of epidemic prevention and control, it is required that the supervisors should do a good job in fulfilling their “first-person” duty demanded of a graduate student supervisor. The supervisors should use WeChat, QQ and other apps to carry out the daily guidance of their students, including literature retrieval and reading, topic selection, research methods, paper writing and revision, as well as other forms of academic guidance, especially the mentoring of the degree paper writing of the third-year students. It is required that the quality of theses should not be lowered due to the epidemic; meanwhile, it is required that the supervisors should care for the students, keeping constant communication with their students (including international students), and reminding them to strictly abide by the University’s deployment on and requirements for epidemic prevention and control.
III. Attach great importance to and observe all regulations concerning epidemic prevention and control and ensure the orderly progress of postgraduate course teaching
According to the "Notice on Conducting the Mixed Online/Offline Course Teaching for Graduate Students in the Coming Spring Semester against the Backdrop of the Epidemic Prevention and Control of COVID-19” issued by Jiangsu University on January 28, the SFL deployed just on the same day the implementation of the mixed online/offline teaching work, requiring the faculty members concerned to make full use of the online resources available and the newly established WeChat enterprise platform for Jiangsu University, or the self-built QQ and WeChat groups to carry out the mixed online/offline course teaching, to strive to ensure that the teaching content is fully retained, the teaching quality highly guaranteed, and the ideological borderline strictly guarded, and to formulate their individualized mixed teaching plans by retaining the original content and maintaining the original progress. At the same time, full-staff staff were appointed to actively coordinate and make assistance to the online course teaching. Through the careful organization of the School leaders and the concerted efforts made by the whole staff, the SFL has accomplished the mixed online/offline teaching plans of all graduate courses in advance. On February 11, the online teaching of the first postgraduate course began.
