In accordance with the unified deployment of the Teaching Affairs Office of the University, the School of Foreign Languages recently conducted surveys on renovating the undergraduate programs for English, English (for Education) and Japanese. Both the administrative and the Party leadership of the School attached great importance to these surveys. Deputy Dean Wu Peng heads the investigative team comprising deans (or directors) and deputy deans (or directors) of all departments of the School of Foreign Languages.
At the Pre-survey Meeting held on November 20, Wu declared the overall plan and points for attention to the investigative team, stressing that all members of the team should conduct a systematic, conscientious reflection on the merits and demerits of the current undergraduate programs, focus their attention on the key issues and hard nuts concerning the talent cultivation, get ready to seek advice humbly from sister colleges and universities with a strong consciousness of problem, and write their survey report earnestly. On November 25, headed by Wu Peng, the investigative team went to seek advice from the School of Foreign Languages, Southeast University. There they conducted an in-depth investigation into the basic framework and distinctive features of the College English Curriculum, and the basic talent training program, feature courses, internship and course modules of the English and the Japanese major. Moreover, the investigative team exchanged ideas with deputy deans of the School of Foreign Languages, Southeast University, and deans and course leaders of the Japanese and the English Department on how to overcome the problems confronting the formulation of new teaching programs. On November 27, the team headed by Wu went to visit the School of Foreign Languages, Soochow University. During their stay in Soochow, they not only carefully investigated the College English curriculum and the current training programs of the English, the English for Education, and the and Japanese Major, but they also exchanged ideas with the faculty of the School of Foreign Languages, Soochow University on the methods and effects of the construction of quality College English curriculum, as well as the effective measures to consolidate the basic skills of the English and the Japanese majors. Through these two surveys, the investigative team began to form a clear idea about the orientation for renovating the teaching programs, had found solutions to some of the existing problems, and also enhanced the morale to a certain extent.
According the School’s planning on the surveys, the School will send more people to carry out investigations in one or two “Double First-class” universities, to conduct intensive interviews with 4-6 prospective employers of the School graduates and to make large-scale questionnaire surveys among graduates of the past three years and the students at college from the end of November to the beginning of December. It is hoped that the School will from a comprehensive and detailed report on the surveys, Guidelines for Jiangsu University College English Curriculum of Grade 2020, and the new programs for three majors.
