On November 27, the 1st Jiangsu University “Tribute to Classics” Bilingual Recitation Competition was held in Z213 of the Main Building. Ye Fulian, Zhuang Xiaomin, Zhou Xiaohua, Zhang Weihua, as well as School of Foreign Languages Dean Li Chongyue, constituted the panel and awarded the prizes to the winners.
In the two-stage tryouts before the competition, 15 outstanding students emerged out of over 40 competitors. The competition was emceed by Wang Jingguo of Class 1701, TESOL major. Through the recitation of a designated text, the prepared speech on a keyword, and answering the questions raised by a foreign teacher, Xu Xiaoyu of Class 1802 won a special prize, Wang Yujiao of Class 1803 and Peng Jing of Class 1802 won a first prize, and the rest 12 students won a second or third prize, respectively.
It has been the constant mission of China’s foreign language education to cultivate international talents with a profound knowledge of Chinese culture, a global vision and proficient foreign language skills. The Report to the 19th National Congress of the CPC sets forth the strategic role of the excellent traditional Chinese culture in the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era. It points out that the excellent traditional Chinese culture is not only the historical and cultural foundation for China in the new era, but also an important strategic source for the rejuvenation of the great Chinese nation. The competition was held in response to the call of the 19th National Congress of the CPC for constructing “a cultural power”. It is aimed at encouraging students to integrate the English learning into the inheritance of the excellent traditional Chinese culture and constantly enhancing their intercultural communicative capability.
