In the recently published Argumentation (Issue 4, 2019), an authoritative international periodical indexed by both SSCI and A&HCI, ILIAS researchers Wu Peng and Yan Linqiong each published a long research paper.
Wu Peng’s article, 31 pages long, is entitled “Confrontational maneuvering by declaring a standpoint unallowed or indisputable in spokespersons’ argumentative replies at press conferences of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs”. By adopting the research framework of pragma-dialectics, Wu first gives in his paper a theoretically original definition on commonly employed “unallowed” and “indisputable” argumentations and their maneuvering functions. Then he analyzes the two argumentations by citing authentic argumentative replies of the spokespersons of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese diplomatic values and ideology underlying these argumentations. At the end of his paper, Wu offers reference criteria for a rational assessment of these argumentations.
Yan’s article is entitled “Refutational strategies in Mencius’s argumentative discourse on human nature” (with Xiong Minghui from Sun Yat-sen University as the second author). Her article covers 40 pages. In her paper, Yan reveals how Mencius refuted his opponents argumentatively and strategically on the issue of human nature by adopting the pragma-dialectical approach to reconstruct Mencius’s argumentative discourse on human nature and elaborating the refutational strategies that Mencius employed in various stages, such as dissociation, reductio ad absurdum based on refutational analogy, and conciliation. She not only clarifies from the perspective of logical reasoning and argumentation the essence of Mencius's “Theory of the original goodness of human nature”, always a controversial issue in the academic circles, but also provides a new approach to interpreting Mencius's argumentative discourse.
Argumentation is a top authoritative international journal in the field of argumentation studies, whose impact factor is 1.3 in 2018 (the highest impact factor in argumentation studies). It is Class 2 SSCI journal in the field of “linguistics”. The publication of these two articles by Wu Peng and Yan Linqiong in the same issue shows the strength of the argumentation researchers of Jiangsu University and further enhances the international influence of Jiangsu University researchers.
