On October 23, Università degli Studi di Milano held the International Workshop on “Exploring controversies and debates: argumentation, persuasion and ethics”. School of Foreign Languages Deputy Dean Wu Peng attended the meeting and delivered a keynote speech entitled “Confrontational maneuvering in the spokespersons’ argumentative replies at the regular press conferences of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs”. Leading experts and famous scholars in the international community of argumentation studies such as Frans van Eemeren and Adrea Rocci were invited to deliver speeches at the meeting.
In his speech, based on the argumentative replies of the spokespersons of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Wu Peng analyzed, described and interpreted three argumentative strategies employed by the Chinese spokespersons in replying the acute and sensitive questions raised by the journalists, highlighting the Chinese social, cultural and diplomatic values underlying these maneuvering strategies, as well as rectifying the misreading and misunderstanding of foreign scholars and media on the major country diplomacy of China and its political discourse. Wu’s speech was commended by all experts at the meeting. Afterwards, the conferees held a heated discussion on China’s diplomatic policies and the related discourse concerned.
At the meeting, Wu introduced to the conferees the schooling characteristics of Jiangsu University and particularly the School of Foreign Languages, publicizing the great progress and research achievements that have been made by the ILIAS since it was affiliated to Jiangsu University in 2016, and reached a cooperation intention agreement on the cultivation of undergraduates and postgraduates with the Department of Media Studies and Intercultural Communication at the University of Milan.
