On the afternoon of November 4, Professor Dilin Liu at the Department of English, the University of Alabama, U.S.A. visited the School of Foreign Languages and delivered a lecture in Z513 of the Main Building entitled “The importance and praxes of effective reading in a usage-based SLA: Theoretical and personal perspectives”. More than 80 staff, postgraduates and undergraduates attended the lecture. School of Foreign Languages Deputy Dean & Foreign Languages and Literatures Discipline Leader Prof. Su Jianhong presided over the meeting.
In the lecture that lasts for one and a half hours, Professor Dilin Liu expounded all the way in English the importance and praxes of effective reading in a usage-based based SLA. He highlighted the motivation of language and its important role in teaching English as a second language, elaborating on the application of cognitive metaphors, embodied experience, constructions, chunks, etc. as well as English corpora like COCA to second language acquisition. He attached particular importance to the significance of the encyclopedic knowledge of a language learner. Professor Liu’s lecture features humorous diction, profound knowledge and lively examples, which deeply engrossed the audience. During the Q-A session, Professor Liu answered the questions raised by the interested audience both enthusiastically and meticulously.
Dilin Liu is Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Department of English at the University of Alabama, U.S.A. Professor Liu’s research focuses on the description and teaching of lexis and grammar using cognitive and corpus linguistic approaches. His publications include five monographs and one edited book, more than sixty articles in worldly-renowned SSCI-indexed periodicals such as Applied Linguistics, Journal of English for Academic Purposes, Journal of English Linguistics, and Language Teaching Research. He toured the world to give keynote lectures at important international conferences and in famous universities. He used to be President of Applied Linguistics of TESOL International Association and President of the State of Oklahoma TESOL Association. He is also the holder of honorary titles of “Distinguished Alum Award (2015)”of the School of Liberal Arts, the State University of Oklahoma, “Distinguished Teaching Fellow (2013-2016)”of the School of Liberal Arts, the University of Alabama, and “Outstanding Faculty Award (2003)” of Oklahoma City University.
