On the afternoon of August 25, School of Foreign Languages Dean Li Chongyue presided over the SFL Teaching Session of the new semester. School leaders, and deans and deputy deans and Party branch secretaries of all departments attended the meeting.
At the meeting, each department gave an account of the assignment of teaching tasks for the autumn semester and the planning on relevant main tasks. Deputy Dean Wang Ying communicated the gist of the Regular Teaching Session of the Teaching Affairs Office. Deputy Party Committee Secretary Xiao Jianru raised requirements on the academic guidance of students.
Dean Li Chongyue raised explicit requirements on the teaching work of the SFL as follows. Firstly, the English, the English for Education and the Japanese Department should actually keep a close eye on “Student Satisfaction Survey”, making effort to improve the students’ satisfaction with learning. The three departments should hold a faculty meeting on the coming Wednesday afternoon to conduct a discussion on the assessment parameters of “Student Satisfaction Survey” so that every teacher will get at the specific meaning of each parameter of the survey and make effort to improve the students’ satisfaction with learning through their teaching practice. Secondly, the English and the Japanese Department should make further study on how to refine the specialty features and highlight the specialty advantages and embody these features and advantages in the new training program. Thirdly, the English for Education Department should painstakingly prepare for the professional certification in accordance with the concrete requirements for teacher education programs. The department should strive to pass the certification at one stroke by living up to each parameter of the certification. Fourthly, each department should make arrangements for the 51 students that had been transferred into the School of Foreign Languages this term to study in an appropriate class and/or grade. Fifthly, the three College English Teaching Departments should do a good job of classifying the English teaching for freshmen. They should give an appropriate post-admission test to those freshmen that might be entered into an IELTS class, getting fully acquainted with their intention to study abroad, to take an IELTS exam and with their knowledge of the exam. Sixthly, the Postgraduate English Teaching Department should make an investigation into the IELTS demand of the newly accepted graduate students, and offer IELTS courses with more pertinence and better teaching efficacy. Seventhly, the School will encourage each department to construct quality courses, quality textbooks, and online courses, to cultivate teaching achievement awards, and strive to construct a first-grade undergraduate program. Finally, Dean Li gave some remarks on assessment parameters for “Undergraduate Teaching” of the University’s Year-end Appraisal System.
To conclude the meeting, SFL Party Branch Secretary Lu Yunsong stressed that each department should strive to accomplish each teaching task for the new semester, hoping that all faculty members will become teachers with “Four Merits”, that is teachers with pious faith, with high moral standards, with solid foundation of knowledge, with kindheartedness. He also required the staff to defend the socialist position of ideology, accomplish the fundamental task of cultivating moral people and build the School of Foreign Languages into a powerful school for teaching as soon as possible.
