On the afternoon of May 5, the wonderful moment, i.e. the oral presentation, of the 16th Postgraduate Simulated International Academic Conference of Jiangsu University went onto the stage. The competition was sponsored by the Graduate School and the School of Foreign Languages, undertaken by the Postgraduate English Teaching Department. It was held in No. 1 Auditorium of the Meeting Center. Four Chinese postgraduate teams and 2 overseas postgraduates stood out from more than 1000 contestants entered for the competition at the initial and the second round of competition.
Jiangsu University Vice President and Graduate School Dean Quan Li delivered a speech in English at the opening ceremony. In his speech, Quan sang a high praise for the efforts that have been made in recent years by the Postgraduate English Teaching Department to explore the teaching reform. He was highly affirmative in commenting on the creative model of “Chinese and Overseas Students and Their Supervisors on the Same Stage” , calling for the postgraduates to reinforce their consciousness of academic frontiers, actively participating in the international exchanges between researchers of different cultural backgrounds, broadening their international vision and strengthening their communicative ability, and striving to be top-notch talents in the international community.
The final oral presentation consists of group presentation and live Q&A. The panelists for the final comprise of Li Chongyue, Dean of the School Of Foreign Languages, Wang Changda, Deputy Dean Of the Graduate School, Cui Yong, Deputy Dean of the Overseas Education College, Liu Lei, Deputy Director of the New Materials Research Institute, and Chen Xin, Dean of Postgraduate English Teaching Department, and foreign teacher Frankie. The competition was very exciting, especially during the Q-A session. The participation of six supervisors greatly enhanced the players' morale and the quality of thee answers of the contestants. In the end, the teams from the School of Arts and the Overseas Education College each won a first prize, and the teams from the School of Energy and Power Engineering, the School of Mechanical Engineering, the Overseas Education College, and the joint team of the School of Pharmacy and the Science Faculty won a second or a third prize respectively. Finally, Liu Lei made a wonderful comment on the performance of the contestants.
The “Postgraduate Simulated International Academic Conference” has been held in succession for 16 years and has now become one of the symbolic construction projects of Jiangsu University’s postgraduate English teaching reform. The competition has always attached importance to the renovation on both form and contents. The competition is open to both the Chinese and overseas postgraduates, with a view to promoting the competition and teaching at the same time, enhancing the enthusiasm and quality of the postgraduate students of Jiangsu University in participating the international academic exchanges, and promoting the international strategy of Jiangsu University.
