Days ago, news came that two JSU students, namely Wang Jingguo of the School of Foreign Languages and Gu Yuqian of the School of Liberal Arts, respectively won a special award for Type B and Type C at the 2019 National English Competition for College Students (NECCS). This is the first time that JSU students have won the highest award at this competition. 13 other students won a first prize.
The preliminary test of the NECCS was sponsored by the Academic Affairs Office and organized by the Clinic for Foreign Language Learning (CFLL) at the School of Foreign Languages. This the first time the CFLL has undertaken this competition. The CFLL attached great importance to the task, so it established the Organizing Committee for the NECCS at the end of 2018 in accordance with the instructions of the Academic Affairs Office and the School of Foreign Languages. Large-scale publicity was conducted all over the campus and finally nearly 2600 students signed up for the competition, 1000 more than in 2018 and a record high in its history. Meticulous preparation for the exam and conscientious assessment of the papers guaranteed the success of the preliminary. Then 15 experienced teachers were recruited from the School to offer lectures and individual coaching to the special award and first prize winners of the University-level competition. Ms. Wu Aihui accompanied the contestants to participate in the final of NECCS held in Nanjing during the second ten days of May.
The NECCS is now the largest-scale nation-wide comprehensive English competition in China. The competition comprises of 4 types, that is, A, B, C, D types. It is aimed at facilitating the Higher Education Teaching Assessment of the Ministry of Education, implementing the Gist of the Ministry of Education about College English Teaching Reform and Examination Reform, boosting the interest of college students at large in English learning, enormously raising the English level of college students, and rewarding the college students standing out for their excellent performance in English. When China is constantly reforming its College English teaching reform and the Chinese college students are confronted with the severe situation of employment, more and more colleges and universities attach importance to this competition, for the administrative departments of many colleges and universities have fixed the NECCS awards as important parameters for the yearly appraisal and professional promotion of faculty, as well as important certificates for the postgraduate admission qualification, comprehensive assessment, employment and permanent residence application, and overseas study of college students.
