From May 8 to 9, “2019 College Superior Course Seminar of Jiangsu Province & Advanced Seminar for Deans of College English Teaching Offices / Departments of Jiangsu Province” was held at the School of Applied Technologies, Soochow University. Four deans from the School of Foreign Languages, Jiangsu University attended the seminar. Ms. Wu Yuanyuan gave a successful demo lesson to the participants.
The meeting was co-sponsored by Jiangsu Association for College Foreign Language Teaching and Research, the School of Applied Technologies of Soochow University, and Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press. More than 80 deans of the School of Foreign Languages or College English Offices or Departments of Jiangsu colleges and universities attended the meeting. The distinguished participants at the meeting include Professor Fu Jufen, Dean of the School of Applied Technologies, Soochow University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Professor Jin Yan, Director of the Examination Committee of the CET-4 and CET-6, Professor Wang Haixiao, Vice President of Jiangsu Association for College Foreign Language Teaching and Research, Professor & Senior Editor Zhang Yigang of Foreign Language World, a former director of the Editorial Office of Foreign Language Education Press, Professor Zhu Xinfu, Dean of Soochow University, Professor Su Yina and her College English Teaching and Research Faculty at Soochow University, etc. Various activities were organized at the meeting, including the delivery of lectures by experts and demo lessons by participants, to highlight the theme of “Annihilate the inferior and create the superior College English courses”. The ways to realizing the objective were discussed from the aspects of teaching design, classroom practice, etc.
The demo lesson given by Ms. Wu Yuanyuan won the universal acclaim of the experts and participants at the meeting. They were greatly impressed by her novel teaching notion, painstaking teaching design, the various activities she had arranged in the class and her humorous teaching style. Wu’s Academic English Reading and Writing was designed in accordance with the Pragma-dialectical Theory. In her lesson, she tried to cultivate the students’ critical discussion ability and promote their critical thinking ability in reading and writing. In addition, she made an effort to unconsciously enhance the political and ideological level of her students by inculcating the values underlying the reading materials that conform to the “Socialist Core Values”. The panelist all said that Ms. Wu’s lecture was nothing less a Superior Course for its “advancement”, “creativity” and “level of challenge”
Academic English Reading and Writing is an integral course of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) of the School of Foreign Languages, Jiangsu University. The EAP is intended to gifted students to acquire the English skills for academic purposes, to enhance their critical and innovative thinking ability, and to prepare them for their international communication and academic exchanges. Through the efforts that have been made by the EAP Teaching Group, the program is now able to meet the ever higher demand of the students on English learning both in theory and practice.
