On the afternoon of April 10, the School of Foreign Languages held the Promotion Conference on Reforming College English Courses in the Center for International Languages Courses (Z102), deploying the implementation of the College English Curriculum Reform Scheme for Grade 2019. Deans of all College English Teaching Departments as well as deans of other departments of the SFL attended the meeting presided over by SFL Deputy Dean Wu Peng.
At the Conference, Deputy Dean Wu Peng first introduced the necessity, objective, principles and overall direction of the current round of deepened reform. According to Wu, the reform must be carried out in accordance with the University’s long-term development plan, to meet the demands raised by the University for the international language level of students, to meet the multiple learning needs of students and to actually enhance the professional development of the faculty. Hence all the faculty of College English Teaching Departments (I, II and III) should conduct a thorough rethinking on the achievements and shortcomings of the College English Curriculum Reform of Grade 2016, take time to carry out surveys both inside and outside Jiangsu province on the foreign language learning demands of students, carry out repeated discussions and finally formulate the “College English Curriculum Guidelines (2019) of Jiangsu University”. Finally, the participants conversed on the experiences, achievements and problems that have been gained, made or revealed in the past three years under the current College English Curriculum. A basic consensus was reached via heated discussions on the focused issues of the hierarchical graded multiple instruction, the mixed online-offline teaching mode, the docking with the “Graded English Competence Scale of China”, the overall implementation of autonomous learning in listening, speaking, reading and writing courses, the construction of political ideology, the enhancement of learning through competition, etc. under the framework of the Guidelines of 2019.
