On the afternoon of January 9, Professor Chen Xinren at the School of Foreign Languages, Nanjing University delivered a lecture entitled “Literature review and academic innovation” in Room 513 of the Main Building. Nearly 100 students and faculty of the School of Foreign Languages including Dean of the School Professor Li Chongyue attended the lecture. Deputy Dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Pacesetter of the Discipline of Foreign Languages and Literatures Professor Su Jianhong presided over the meeting.
Professor Chen Xinren noted in his lecture that literature review is an important part of the academic research and the premise for academic innovation. The literature review is multi-functional and a researcher is expected to own a good consciousness of the literature available. In the course of reviewing previous studies, a researcher ought to cultivate the consciousnesses of classics, correlation, problem, objective, evaluation, inheritance, synthesis, and norms. The academic innovation is generally oriented towards and based on a scientific and exclusive literature review.
The profound lecture delivered by Chen Xinren is expounded in simple words to engross the audience. During the QA session that followed, the audience was further enthused. The wonderful but rigorous lecture by Professor Chen will help enhance the research level of the students and faculty of the School of Foreign Languages, giving a push to the discipline construction of the School.
Professor Chen Xinren is President of China Pragmatics Association. He has excelled himself and achieved great achievements in the fields of pragmatic theory and application, language policy and language planning, etc. He has completed as project leader 2 projects of National Social Science Fund of China, and published 18 books on various subjects and more than 140 high-level academic papers in renowned periodicals both at home and abroad.
