On the afternoon of October 17, Dr. Li Min of the School of Foreign Languages delivered a lecture titled “Pragmatics and foreign language learning” at the Fine-pine Forum. The forum was sponsored by the Publicity Department of Jiangsu University Party Committee and undertaken by the School of Foreign Languages. It was presided over by Zhu Wen, Member of the SFL Party Committee. More than 140 SFL postgraduates, Grade 2018 English freshmen and English for Education freshmen attended the lecture.
In his lecture, after introducing the definition of pragmatics, the reason for pragmatic study, and the main issues concerning pragmatic studies, Dr. Li Min elaborated on the revelation of pragmatics on and its significance to foreign language learning, pointed out the guiding significance of pragmatics to foreign language instruction, and voiced his opinions on the pragmatic turn in China’s foreign language education, with concrete examples and from the perspectives of pragmatic language, social pragmatics, cognitive pragmatics and discourse pragmatics. In the end, Dr. Li Min suggests that foreign language majors should strengthen their professional connotation, enhance their professional accomplishment and be qualified foreign language professionals on the basis of strengthening their language competence.
