On the afternoon of October 21, the JSU finals of 2018 “FLTRP Cup” National English Public Speaking Contest were held in No. 3 Lecture Hall of the Meeting Center of Jiangsu University. The contest, co-sponsored by the Teaching Affairs Office, Jingjiang College, and the School of Foreign Languages, was undertaken by the Center for International Language Courses of the School of Foreign Languages. The panel comprises Chen Xin, Dean of the Postgraduate English Teaching Department, Zhong Lanfeng, Dean of the Department of English for Education (TESOL), Li Jiajun, Dean of College English Teaching Department (I), Wu Aihui, Dean of the Clinic for Foreign Language Learning, Ma Fenghua, Deputy Dean of the English Department, and foreign teacher Dr. Fran Quattri.
150 students from all majors on campus were registered for the contest. Through tryouts at different levels, 50 students were selected to compete for the 15 positions at the finals. The finals comprise two stages. At the first stage, students were required to deliver a 3-minute prepared speech. At the second stage, each contestant was required to answer a question raised by one of the panelists concerning the speech within 1 minute. The audience applauded the excellent speeches delivered in fluent English by the contestants from time to time. Through fierce rivalry, 8 contestants were awarded a first prize, and 4 a grand prize. The grand prize winners Huang Xiaohan, Li Rui, Li Ruohui, and Dai Yutong will participate in the 2018 “FLTRP Cup” National Public Speaking Contest for Jiangsu scheduled November 8-11 in Jiangsu University. In the course of the contest, SFL students sang English songs to enthuse and amuse the audience.
The contest helped broaden the international vision of JSU students, promote their international quality and create a platform for the learning of foreign languages and the cultivation of excellent talents.
