On November 8, the 2018 “FLTRP Cup” National English Public Speaking Contest for Jiangsu was ceremoniously opened in the Meeting Center of Jiangsu University. Vice President Professor Mei Qiang spoke at the opening ceremony. Other speakers at the ceremony include Mr. Xu Qing, Deputy Director of the Higher Education Office of the Department of Education of Jiangsu Province, Professor Yang Zhizhong, President of the National Association for College English Teaching Research, Professor Li Xiaoxiang, President of Jiangsu Association for College Foreign Languages Teaching Research, and Mr. Wang Jianping, Director of East China Information Center of Foreign Languages Teaching and Research Press. Vice President Chen Hong of Jiangsu University and Professor Wang Haixiao, Vice President of Jiangsu Association for College Foreign Languages Teaching Research were also president at the meeting. About 300 contestants and their coachers, as well as all the expert panelists of the contest, attended the opening ceremony, presided over by Dean Assistant Wu Peng of the School of Foreign Languages.
On November 9, more than 160 excellent contestants from colleges and universities all over Jiangsu province were divided into Group A and Group B for the provincial tryouts respectively held in No. 1 Lecture and No. 3 Lecture Hall of the Meeting Center. They are each required to deliver a 3-minute prepared speech followed by a 1-minute Q&A. The top 13 contestants of each group were finally promoted to the finals scheduled on November 10 in No. 1 Lecture Hall. The first round of finals takes the form of a 3-minute impromptu speech plus a 1-minute Q&A. At all these contests, the contestants fully displayed their language ability, critical thinking competence and speaking talent. The audience applauded the wonderful performance of the contestants from time to time. Jiangsu finals granted a total of 16 first prizes, 24 second prizes, and 57 third prizes. The top 3 students to participate on behalf of Jiangsu in the national finals scheduled December 4-8 in Beijing were eventually selected at the round of debate. JSU contestants created the best results at the contest in the University history. Li Congying won a second prize; Li Rui and Li Ruofei respectively won a third prize.
The Contest is jointly hosted and organized by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, Beijing Waiyan Online Education Technology Co., Ltd and China Foreign Languages Testing Center, with assistance from National Foreign Languages Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education, National Advisory Board on Teaching English Language to Majors in Higher Education under the Ministry of Education, and Jiangsu Association for College Foreign Languages Teaching Research. It is undertaken by the School of Foreign Languages, Jiangsu University, with much support from the Teaching Affairs Office, the Publicity Department of the University Party Committee, the Youth League of Jiangsu University, the Logistics Service Group, the Informatization Center, etc. More than 100 faculty and students of the School of Foreign Languages took an active part in the Contest, helping organizing the tryouts and finals, serving as volunteers, and doing whatever they could to make a successful contest.
