On November 8, at the opening ceremony of the “FLTRP Cup” National English Public Speaking Contest for Jiangsu, Jiangsu University officially declared the initiation of “Lv Shuxiang Experimenting Class for Top Foreign Language Talents” and held an unveiling ceremony for it. Vice President Professor Mei Qiang of Jiangsu University, Mr. Xu Qing, Deputy Director of the Higher Education Office of the Department of Education of Jiangsu Province, Professor Yang Zhizhong, President of the National Association for College English Teaching Research, Professor Li Xiaoxiang, President of Jiangsu Association for College Foreign Languages Teaching Research, Professor Wang Haixiao, Vice President of Jiangsu Association for College Foreign Languages Teaching Research and Mr. Wang Jianping, Director of East China Information Center of Foreign Languages Teaching and Research Press together unveiled the nameplate for the experimenting class. Dean Assistant Wu Peng of the School of Foreign Languages presided over the unveiling ceremony.
Beginning this year, the School of Foreign Languages will each year select 10-15 English freshmen with excellent comprehensive qualities and willingness to form the “Experimenting Class for Top Foreign Language Talents”. By so doing the School is aimed at cultivating students in the experimenting class into “top-notch talents” with proficiency in two foreign languages, a broad vision of the future, a solid foundation in humanistic literacy, a high level of scientific knowledge, a strong consciousness of research innovation, adeptness in communicating with others and a fervid sense of patriotism by implementing the open-door educational policy and amassing the best teaching resources both at home and abroad, renovating the curriculum and teaching mode, and highlighting the liberal education under the guidance of the Teaching Affairs Office. In the meanwhile, the School will seize the opportunity of setting up this experimenting class to excavate China’s foreign language teaching thoughts for the establishment of a research basis concerned in the future. The experimenting class is so named with the permission of the offspring of Lv Shuxiang, who is a renowned Chinese linguist and a native of Danyang, a city nearby Jiangsu University. Vice President Mei Qiang pointed out at the ceremony that the experimenting class a bold step that has been taken by Jiangsu University in exploring the Chinese way of cultivating foreign language talents.
The initiative and the cultivation mode of the experimenting class was universally commended by the foreign language experts at the meeting. Just at the meeting Jiangsu Association for College Foreign Languages Teaching Research and Foreign Languages Teaching and Research Press jointly decided that they would hold a “High-level Forum on the Cultivation of Top Foreign Language Talents” in Jiangsu University, where foreign education experts from all over China would meet to explore and nail down the detailed criteria for the cultivation of top foreign language talents.
