Strategically before the opening of the Congress of World Philosophy 2018, an editorial made headlines on August 13th on Guangming Daily titled “Play the philosophical tune of “Learning to Be Human”--an ode on the opening of the Congress of World Philosophy”. In reviewing the achievements that have been made in Chinese philosophy, the editorial particularly noted the fact that “Quite a few Chinese scholars have been elected into the board of editors of top international periodicals, among whom two Chinese scholars, Xiong Minghui and Wu Peng, are among the 19th editors of Argumentation, a leading periodical in the field of informal logic and argumentation theory.” The reporting on JSU scholar Wu Peng by Guangming Daily caused great excitement among the Chinese philosophers, who began to feast their attention on Wu and his research team on argumentation studies.
Prior to this, on July 3, 2018, Professor Frans van Eemeren, Chairman of the International Society for the Study of Argumentation, held a ceremony at the ISSA Conference at Amsterdam University in the Netherlands to personally present Wu Peng with works of great international influence in honor of the significant achievements made by him in the Chinese study of argumentation, and the key role played by him in bridging the communication between Chinese and Western pragma-dialectics. This is the first time that the president of the ISSA Conference has bestowed books to Asian scholars since its inception more than 30 years ago. It highlights the international influence of the Chinese argumentation theory in recent years, paving the way for the internationalization and the leap-forward development of the argumentation research team in JSU.
The argumentation research team of the School of Foreign Languages, Jiangsu University was formally established in August 2013. Over the past five years, the team members have been working hard together in novel fields such as argumentation theory, media argumentation, policy argumentation, academic argumentation and legal argumentation, actively exploring and expanding the channels for international cooperation, making full use of international academic resources, and striving to broaden and take the lead in the vision, theory and method of argumentation. In November 2016, in view of the huge potential of the research team, the International Learned Institute of Argumentation Studies (ILIAS), the only international research institute devoted exclusively to argumentation studies, was admitted to Jiangsu University, bringing high-quality international academic resources into the University’s research team. Now the team has become a powerful force in the field of argumentation studies both at home and abroad, and has cultivated a group of young teachers and graduate students taking lead in both teaching and research.
