On the afternoon of April 17, the School of Foreign Languages held the first “Department (Centre) Teaching Administration Seminar” for 2018 in the School Meeting Room. All department (center) deans or directors and all Party branch secretaries of the School who undertake the undergraduate teaching management participated in the Seminar. The main task of this symposium is to share and discuss the progress in and the problems facing of every important task of the departments (centers) since the beginning of this semester, and in the meanwhile to explore the feasibility of and specific methods for the accomplishment of each goal. The Seminar was chaired by Dean Assistant Wu Peng, with the School Party Committee Secretary Lu Yunsong and the School Dean Chen Hong present at the meeting all along.
At the seminar, English Department Dean Wu Qinghong reported on the revision of the Program for English Majors, the formulation of the main courses for the Sino-U.S. Program, the preparation for applying a new major for the School, and the pre-test student coaching for the 2018 TEM-4. TESOL Dean Zhong Lanfeng introduced the one-on-one service offered by the faculty Party members to English Education students, the application for the undergraduate innovation projects, the progress of newly-edited textbooks, and the deployment of faculty members for the work on the major authentication. Huahou Kun and Li Jiajun, respectively dean of the two CET Departments reported to the meeting their pre-test student guidance programs for CET-4 and CET-6 to be held in June this year. They reported how to improve students’ listening and speaking skills, expand students' vocabulary and reading abilities, and raise students’ CET-4 and CET-6 scores to a qualified level as soon as possible, and they also presented their own ideas for the future reform on College English teaching, on the implementation of the expanded courses and on the improvement of classroom teaching effects of their faculty members. Japanese Department Deputy Dean Zhou Rong reported on the operation of the Clinic for Japanese Learning since the beginning of this semester, in which foreign teachers and the Japanese faculty worked together to correct students’ pronunciation and they also decided to spread the practice to the second language learning of the whole university. She also reported the intensive model tests and students’ intensified listening training by foreign teachers that had been arranged by the Japanese Department for the Test for Japanese Majors scheduled in June this year. The Center for International Language Courses has, ever since the beginning of this semester, completed the development of ideological education resources for College English courses, held seminars at various levels, and is currently preparing for open classes and teaching salons at the University level, and in the meanwhile it has also actively applied for public classes for teaching reform and collaborated with other departments to complete the Jiangsu semi-finals of the 7th “LSCAT Cup” National Interpretation Contest, at which the competitors have the best results on the history of JU. The monthly “Jiangxin Academic Salon” of the Clinic for Foreign Languages Learning has also been in progress as scheduled. In June, the School will select and train potential students for the “FLTRP Cup” Reading and Writing Contests.
Party Committee Secretary Lu Yunsong delivered a speech laying stress on the importance of enhancing the teachers’ sense of their duties and responsibilities, saying that we should never forget the fundamental goals of the moral education, pay attention to the development of ideological education resources for the curriculum, and strengthen the guiding role of the ideological and political education on students. Dean Chen Hong gave full credit to the seminar and offered very good suggestions on solving the actual difficulties facing each department. She demanded each department to work meticulously at every task and encourage more students to do overseas exchanges. In the end, Wu Peng declared the planning on specific teaching goals to be reached by the departments in the latter half of this school year.
