On the afternoon of March 27th, the "Jiangsu University Seminar on College English Ideological Education Resources Development and Its Teaching Design" sponsored by the School of Foreign Languages was successfully held in No. 2 Lecture Hall of the University Meeting Center. Jiangsu University Party Committee Secretary Yuan Shouqi, Vice President Mei Qiang, Publicity Department Director Jin Lifu, Party Office Director Zheng Peigang, Deputy Director of the Teaching Affairs Office Feng Jun, the School of Marxism Associate Dean Li Li, and the whole Party and administrative leadership of the School of Foreign Languages and directors and deputy directors of the affiliated departments of the SFL attended the seminar. The seminar was chaired by Chen Hong, dean of the School of Foreign Languages.
At the seminar, the School of Foreign Languages Party Committee Secretary Lu Yunsong first highlighted the necessity and urgency of developing ideological education resources for College English classes. Then the School of Foreign Languages Dean Assistant Wu Peng gave an overview of the background, ideas, and program of the College English ideological education resources development and its teaching design at Jiangsu University, focusing on how to improve the students’ basic language skills by “integrating the ideological education seamlessly” into College English lessons so that it will truly “exert its power silently.” Based on the above speeches, Wu Yuanyuan, team leader of College English Writing, Zhu Xiaoyu, team Leader of College English Reading, Li Rui, team leader of College English Listening and Speaking, and Cai Shanshan, team leader of College English Translation, each introduced the achievements made by their groups in the excavation and development of resources for ideological education and personally demonstrated the specific teaching methods that might be employed in teaching practice. Under the guidance of Xi Jiping’s thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era and “College English Curriculum Requirements”, the four teachers’ teaching design fully explores the ideological educational elements in the main textbooks in use, the domestic and foreign resources of English media, the Chinese cultural classics and Xi Jinping’s The Governance of China, having exquisitely demonstrated how to make the best of the classroom hours to conduct the ideological education with language materials, and how to subconsciously guide the students to understand and adhere to the core values of socialism and to fortify their four confidences while better completing the teaching objective of College English curriculum.
During the time for suggestions and comments at the seminar, Vice President Mei Qiang, Director Jin Lifu, Director Zheng Peigang, Deputy Director Feng Jun and Deputy Dean Li Li each provided some guiding opinions on the conception of conducting the ideological education in College English classes and the specific plans for the teaching practice. Jiangsu University Party Committee Secretary Yuan Shouqi finally made a concluding speech. He first gave full recognition to the work done by the School of Foreign Languages in the development of the ideological resources for college English classes and their teaching design. He then put forward six suggestions: 1. The work conducting ideological education in College English courses should be generalized to cover the postgraduate English teaching and the language teaching to international students; 2. The conception of the ideological education in the College English curriculum should also absorb the spirit of Jiangsu University that says “Strive to promote moral standards and take action to seek the truth;” 3. Teachers should make efforts to teach by precept and example, so that they will truly “be a teacher with great learning and high moral standards;” 4. College English courses should highlight and feature the development of ideological education resources and its instructional design and rush to the first; 5. College English teachers in charge of the political education must actively carry out relevant teaching researches to make outstanding research achievements and promote them in the academic community; 6. It is necessary to actively write supplementary teaching materials for ideological and political education in College English courses that will facilitate the use of peers.
This seminar is an important job that has been done by the School of Foreign Languages in the course of implementing the spirit of the meeting on ideological work at the University, the provincial and the state level to fully promote the educational functions of the ideological resources in foreign language courses. The seminar helped everyone unify their understanding, boosted their confidence, made clear their direction, and improved their ability. It has laid a good foundation for the promotion of the use of language materials for ideological education at college and for the offering of demonstration classes to college students in the whole province and even the whole country.
