On the morning of March 12th, after repeated discussions and elaborate preparation the School of Foreign Languages officially launched the Japanese Language Learning Clinic in the Main Building. This is an additional foreign language learning diagnosis and treatment program for faculties and students of the whole university established following the successful initiation of the English Language Learning Clinic in 2016.
Just on the opening day, 10 Japanese majors from Class 1601 came to the “Japanese Language Learning Clinic” in Z401, where Associate Professor Wang Ying, director of the Japanese Department, and Matsumoto Daisuke, a distinguished teacher from Japan, jointly introduced to the students the operation progress and objective of the Japanese clinic, emphasizing that the purpose of the diagnosis and treatment is to provide students with a “customized” counseling that integrates personalization and humanistic service, including correcting the students’ incorrect pronunciation and intonation, helping students master the essentials of Japanese conversation, and expanding their Japanese vocabulary.
During the activities on the first day, Mr. Matsumoto carefully recorded the Japanese level of each student through talking to them one by one in Japanese, then paired the students into groups to speak on certain topics, and took pains to give guidance and correction to the students one by one on their problems with Japanese pronunciation, intonation and grammar. In view of the fact that junior students are likely to be influenced by their mother tongue in the process of Japanese learning, Matsumoto prompted students to read more books and take notes on them. He advised students to form a “reading group” to help each other and cultivate a sense of Japanese language. He also advised students to listen to the Japanese news on “NHK” and read more classic works so that they will steadily improve their Japanese listening and speaking skills and thinking ability.
According to the scheduled plan, the Japanese clinic will extend its services to faculties and students that need to learn Japanese in all specialties and subjects of the University, providing them with personalized, humanized and follow-up Japanese language learning advice, study planning and pronunciation training. The Clinic will take the lead in developing Japanese language courses or lectures suitable for all students of the University, on the basis of which we will systematically conduct empirical studies on learning disabilities and learning strategies in Japanese. We will use the latest research findings of ours to further promote the College Japanese teaching and the language teaching for the Japanese majors in our university.
