On February 28th, the School of Foreign Languages held an Inner-School Seminar on College English Ideological Education Resources Development and Its Teaching Design at the Meeting Room of the International Language Courses Center. More than ten key College English teachers who participated in the development of ideological education resources and its teaching design attended the seminar. The meeting was chaired by Dean Assistant Wu Peng. Party Committee Secretary Lu Yunsong and Dean Chen Hong delivered speeches at the seminar.
At the seminar, Wu Peng first introduced to the participants the background and principal notions of the College English ideological education resources development and its teaching design. Under the new situation at present, Wu said, as an important course of higher education with a great many teaching hours and for a wide range of students, College English shall be vested with the important task of improving the ideological and political quality of college students. The conception of ideological education shall be one of the fundamental theories of College English teaching so that all College English teachers should take the initiative to participate in the development of ideological education resources, teaching design and practice, cultivating the educational concept of “conducting the ideological education whenever and wherever a College English lesson is given.”
Then five teachers, namely Kong Lingxuan, Wu Yuanyuan, Pan Xiujie, Zhu Xiaoyu, and Cai Shanshan, detailed to the participants the language materials and teaching suggestions for the ideological education that had been excavated, collected and sorted since November 2017 by the team responsible for the ideological education resources development.
After listening to the above reports, Secretary Lu Yunsong pointed out that all College English teachers should conscientiously study the theory of socialism with Chinese characteristics, make an in-depth study of the important speeches delivered by General Secretary Xi Jinping, thoroughly understand the gist and essence of Xi Jinping’s thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era, and constantly enhance their their consciousness of the need to maintain political integrity, think in big-picture terms, follow the leadership core, and keep in alignment, raise their political stance, truly grasp the significance, direction, content, and methods of ideological education for college students, and comprehend the importance and urgency of consciously conducting ideological education on college students in College English classes. The language materials finalized by the Ideological and Political Resources Development and Instructional Design Team, Lu continued, should be able to guide students to fortify their confidence in the path, theory, system, and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics, understand the importance of the comprehensive construction of “the Five-sphere Integrated Plan”, adhere to the socialist core values, establish a correct world outlook, an outlook on life, and an outlook on values, and strengthen the national awareness, the awareness of the rule of law, and the awareness of social responsibility.
In the end, Dean Chen Hong pointed at strategies for specific teaching practice, saying that as the teaching methodology is concerned, the ideological education should be “seamlessly integrated” into College English classes and “exerting its power silently”. In details, the “seamless integration” means to find the affinity between the basic requirements for English language teaching and the language materials for ideological education, to find the complementation between the backbone textbook for College English and the language material for ideological education, and to realize the maximum classroom effect of the language material for ideological education in the course of completing the existing teaching objective of College English classes. The “silent exertion of power” means to stimulate students' sense of participation, and subtly guide students to understand and stand firm on ideological and political positions by employing well-designed language teaching cases, highlighting the orientation of practical problems, and skillfully using the language material for ideological education.
Since November 2017, at the call and under the support of the Party Committee of the School of Foreign Languages and the School administration, the Center for International Language Courses has taken the lead in organizing the College English teachers of the School with both advanced political thinking and teaching level to conscientiously study the important speeches made by General Secretary Xi Jinping since the 18th National Congress, to develop a good grasp of the core values of socialism, the thought on the comprehensive construction of “Five-sphere Integrated Plan” , and the gist of “four confidences”, to clarify complementary relationship in College English between the teaching of language, culture and thinking mode and the teaching of ideological education, actively develop the ideological education resources for College English classes, and comprehensively collect the language materials for the ideological education in College English teaching. During this period, the top leaders of the Party and administration of the School have headed the team teachers to carry out three rounds of collective learning and discussion, and fixed a preliminary overall plan for the resource development and teaching design. In this semester we will formally conduct a large-scale investigation on campus (scheduled towards the end of March), and will offer open classes in due time to the whole university.
