January 4, on a snowy day following the advent of the year 2018, Yancheng Institute of Technology School of Foreign Languages Professor Deng Di delivered a lecture in Z513 titled “Reflections on the rights of a translator.” Faculty members and students of the SFL attended the lecture chaired by Professor Li Chongyue, Deputy Dean of the SFL.
Professor Deng Di explored in his lecture the translator’s rights from the following two perspectives: one the one hand, he explored the abuse and absolutization of the translator’s rights; on the other hand, he proposed a limitation on the absolutization of the translator’s rights. In the first part of his lecture, Professor Deng noted the generalization of the concept of translation in western translation theories, pointing out the neglect of the only essential attribute of translation, that is the attribute of faithfulness in these theories resulting from the extreme emphasis put on the rebellion and creativity of translation. In the meanwhile he noted the absolutization of the translator’s rights in Chinese translation theories, equating the creative translation just to “transeditting” that can be further divided into general transeditting and broad transeditting. In the second part of his lecture, Professor Deng claimed that creativity is a right rather than a duty of the translator, who should draw a clear demarcation between transeditting and creative writing. During the Q-A session, Professor Deng concluded his instructive lecture by conscientiously answering the questions raised by the audience.
