The national finals of the 29th “21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competition, jointly organized by China Daily and 21st Century Education Media, successfully concluded in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province from Oct 17 to 21. Pan Yefei from JSU School of Foreign Languages secured the third prize in the grand final. This is the first time that a JSU student has progressed to the national grand final of this speech competition. This year’s contest has gone through three stages for 10-month, the school-level competition, the regional semi-final and the regional finals, with 247 contestants from 140 universities and colleges across China, including Tsinghua University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, China Foreign Affairs University, finally advancing to the national finals after multiple rounds of selection,
JSU student Pan Yefei demonstrated outstanding performance with mental sharpness, fluency and calm stage presence in the prepared speech and subsequent impromptu speech, fully demonstrating the comprehensive qualities, deep love for the country and sense of responsibility of the students from SFL.
The theme of this year’s contest is “The Revival of Traditional Culture”. Focusing on activities of the Chinese youth in the new era in bringing about the rejuvenation of traditional culture, the participating students enumerated Gen Z’s devotion to spreading traditional Chinese culture and participation in various ways derived from their own experience, in an effort to boost cultural confidence and cultural soft power.
The“21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competition ranks among national A-level subject competition. SFL attached great importance to this competition by arranging Coaching Board of Subject Competitions meticulously to organize the preliminary contest, selecting outstanding participating students for Jiangsu provincial finals, organizing instruction teams, and offering guidance to the participating students. SFL will further marshal strength for beefing up efforts to subject competitions, nurturing exceptional foreign language talents with international communications capabilities and intercultural competence.
Held by China Daily, the“21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competition has become one of the oldest and the highest-level English-speaking competitions in China. With the slogan “Let the world hear you”, this competition aims to promote core socialist values, cultivate and improve young students’ capacity for engaging in international communication, enhance their abilities to better tell the stories of China, pooling their strength to the enhancement of international communication capacity, promotion of exchanges and mutual learning between civilizations, and the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.
