On October 25-27, the 8th Member Representative Conference of Jiangsu Translators Association and the Academic Seminar on "Building a Cultural Power and Innovative Development of Translation Research", hosted by Jiangsu Translation Association and organized by the School of Foreign Languages of Jiangsu University, were successfully held in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province. More than 200 representatives from academic circles inside and outside the province, including Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, Wuhan University, and Jiangsu University, attended the conference.
The 8th Member Representative Conference of Jiangsu Translation Association was chaired by Professor Yu Hongliang from Yangzhou University. The conference approved the list of members for the new council and determined the organizer for the 2025 Annual Conference and Academic Seminar. Cheng Caixia, Secretary General of Jiangsu Provincial Federation of Social Sciences, delivered an important speech.
At the opening ceremony of the academic seminar, Chen Hong, Vice Chairman of the Zhenjiang Municipal Political Consultative Conference and Vice President of Jiangsu University, Professor Xu Jun, Honorary President of the Jiangsu Translation Association, and Professor Liu Chengfu, President of the Jiangsu Translation Association, delivered speeches respectively. Li Chongyue, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages at Jiangsu University, presided over the opening ceremony. Vice President Chen Hong introduced the educational background and international influence of Jiangsu University, emphasizing the outstanding achievements of the School of Foreign Languages at Jiangsu University in the cultivation of translation talents and discipline construction. Professor Xu Jun proposed that the development of translation discipline requires the proper handling of five core relationships. Professor Liu Chengfu hopes that the foreign language academic community will continue to contribute wisdom and strength to the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
In the keynote speeches of the seminar, Professor Liu Junping from Wuhan University, Professor Zhou Lingshun from Yangzhou University, Professor Liu Yunhong from Nanjing University, and Associate Professor He Wenzhong from Zhejiang University delved into topics such as the hot trends and limitations of translation research at home and abroad, the theoretical analysis of translator behavior in the debate between Xu Yuanchong and Xu Jun, the three dimensions of Chinese literary translation criticism, and translation production under the background of generative artificial intelligence, opening up new horizons. This session is chaired by Professor Yan Zhijun from Nanjing Normal University and Professor Gao Fang, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Foreign Languages at Nanjing University.
The subsequent sub-forums focused on six major themes: translation and the construction of foreign discourse systems, international communication capacity building, the study of translators and their subjectivity, the era of digital intelligence and translation research, the translation of classics, and the exchange of Chinese culture and civilization. Nearly 100 scholars read papers, creating a strong academic atmosphere. 24 teachers and students from the School of Foreign Languages at Jiangsu University actively participated, showing the academic vitality.
In the second stage keynote speech, Professor Wang Bo from the National University of Defense Technology discussed the training system for military translation talents in the intelligent era and the innovative development path of foreign language disciplines. Professor Xu Duo from Nanjing Normal University have elaborated on the unique value of translating Non-Mao Text of the Three Kingdoms Tales. Professor Meng Xiangchun from Soochow University proposed dozens of newly constructed translation criticism concepts. Associate Professor Yao Qin from Jiangsu University focuses on the overseas English translation and classic acceptance of Li Qingzhao's poetry. This session was chaired by Professor Zhao Xueqin, President of Zijin College at Nanjing University of Science and Technology, and Professor Fan Xiangtao from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
At the closing ceremony, Professor Cai Bin from Hehai University presided over the summary report of the sub-forum, and Professor Liu Chengfu gave a concluding speech of the conference. Liu highly praised the depth and breadth of this conference, and especially thanked the School of Foreign Languages at Jiangsu University for its efforts in the preparation process, as well as the strong support of Cheng Caixia, Secretary General of Jiangsu Provincial Federation of Social Sciences. He called on the attending scholars to embrace artificial intelligence technology with an open mind and inject momentum into disciplinary innovation.
As the organizer of this conference, the School of Foreign Languages at Jiangsu University has fully demonstrated its significant achievements in the construction of translation disciplines and talent cultivation. The faculty and students of the college actively participated in various activities of the conference, not only sharing research results, but also demonstrating their wisdom and professional abilities in academic exchanges. This grand event not only promotes in-depth dialogue in the academic community, but is also closely linked to the strategic goals of building a strong cultural nation and external communication, highlighting the important mission of foreign language education in the context of the new era. The continuous efforts and active participation of the School of Foreign Languages at Jiangsu University will make more important contributions to telling the story of China well and spreading the voice of China.
