November 17-18, the 1st Jiangsu Graduate Translation and Interpretation Competition was successfully held in Southeast University. 4 JSU graduates participated in the the fierce but wonderful contest. As a result, 2 students won a third prize for interpretation respectively, 1 a third prize for translation, and 1 excellent prize for translation. The breakthrough that has been made by JSU students at this type of competition demonstrates the great achievements of JU graduate education and the profound translation skills and wonderful style of JU graduates.
As one of the many items that comprise the 1st Jiangsu Graduate Research & Innovation Abilities Competition, the graduate translation and interpretation competition is aimed at exerting the guiding and promoting force of a provincial-level competition to enhance teaching, learning, and innovation through competition that are oneness with each other and to constantly promote the quality of graduate education. A total of 125 competitors from colleges and universities of Jiangsu province participated in the competition that displayed the profound accumulation in and the highest level of practical translation and interpretation abilities of Jiangsu graduates. After observing the wonderful interpretation final on the spot, Deputy Director-general Hong Liu of Jiangsu Department of Education delivered a heartfelt speech in praise of the educational philosophy of integrating competition with talent cultivation of each college or university participating in the contest. Southeast University Vice Party Committee Secretary Zheng Jiamao introduced the preparatory work that had been done by his university. Professor Han Ziman, a director of the State MTI Education Advisory Committee and head of the Translation Panelists made wonderful comments on the whole contest.
Starting from June 2017, the contest lasted for more than half a year. The Graduate School and the School of Foreign Languages thought highly of and headed the contest welcomed by each school or college of the University. Contestants were selected through levels of competitions chaired by the Postgraduate Foreign Language Teaching Department, the SFL. A number of faculties of the English Department offered selfless help to the contest. The interpretation and translation groups comprising the contest are respectively guided by SFL Deputy Dean Li Chongyue and Postgraduate Foreign Language Teaching Department Dean Chen Xin, who have offered conscientious coaching to the contestants. The meticulous planning and organization of the contest by the SFL embodies the great importance attached by the SFL to the cultivation of high-level innovative talents and the cultivation of international talents. The holding of this contest also constitutes a useful exploration into the reform on the cultivation model of translators and interpreters.
