On April 20th, the School of Foreign Languages successfully held a high-level expert forum on region and country studies and foreign language talent cultivation in the conference room of the School. Professor Jia Qingguo, member of the Standing Committee of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, special inspector of the Supreme People's Procuratorate, director of the Sino-foreign Cultural Exchange Base of the Ministry of Education, director of the Global Governance Research Center of Peking University, and former dean of the School of International Relations at Peking University, Professor Liu Wei, deputy director of the Policy Planning Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Professor Xing Liju, professor of the Institute of International Studies at Fudan University and vice president of the Shanghai Korean Peninsula Research Association, and Professor Xu Bu, chairman of the Institute of Global Development and Security at Jiangsu University, were invited to attend the forum. All members of the leadership of the School of Foreign Languages, Secretary Wang Limin of the Party Committee of the School of Overseas Education, heads of various disciplines, some teachers, and graduate students of the School of Foreign Languages attended the forum. The forum is chaired by Professor Li Chongyue, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages.
Experts and scholars attending the meeting conducted in-depth discussions on the importance and training models of foreign language talents in different countries and regions in the new era. Jia Qingguo emphasized the importance of strategies and practices for cultivating international communication abilities among college students. He specifically pointed out the necessity of cultivating college students' ability to distinguish right from wrong, put themselves in their shoes, express themselves, and communicate effectively. Liu Wei explored the ability requirements and training paths that foreign language majors should possess from the perspective of diplomacy and foreign affairs. He pointed out that college students should become determined patriots, experts in elite discourse, diligent and self disciplined practitioners, and lifelong learners who continue to move forward. He suggested that college students should have a better understanding of the common expressions used in diplomatic writing and the characteristics of diplomatic discourse, strengthen translation training, and enhance their adaptability, debating ability, and cross-cultural communication skills. Xing Liju introduced foreign language teachers' research path for country and region studies. She encouraged foreign language teachers and students to establish a correct view of history, overall situation and roles, deeply understand the history of different countries, clarify the overall and local contexts, and position themselves correctly. Faced with the difficulty for foreign language teachers to publish papers, Professor Xing suggested taking targeted measures, understanding the journal’s requirements, tracking hot issues, and conducting research in conjunction with national policies. Finally, Xu Bu summarized the wonderful speeches of the three experts and expressed sincere gratitude for their wisdom sharing.
The world is currently undergoing unprecedented changes, and foreign language majors are facing unprecedented challenges. The successful holding of this high-level expert forum provides valuable insights for promoting the reform of foreign language teaching and innovation in talent cultivation models in our school. The School of Foreign Languages will take this forum as an opportunity to actively think about and seek for changes, continuously explore the transformation path of foreign language disciplines in the new era, further promote new models for cultivating compound international talents, and seek new development and explore new prospects in interdisciplinary research.
