December 6, the final stage of 2017 FLTRP “Star Teacher” Contest was held in Beijing. The contest is jointly undertaken by the Supervisory Committee for College Foreign Language Teaching under the Ministry of Education, the Branch Supervisory Committee for the Teaching of English Majors under the Ministry of Education, and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. Standing out from the 22 elite contestants, Li Chao of the School of Foreign Languages, Jiangsu University eventually won a first prize at the exceptionally ferocious last stage of 2017 FLTRP “Star Teacher” Contest, together with an allowance to support her academic visit to Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and a chance to sit the English Test for International Communication free of charge. This is the best result that has been achieved at the contest by contestants from Jiangsu University.
The FLTRP “Star Teacher” Contest is a large-scale competition for foreign language teachers of Chinese colleges and universities. Initiated in 2013, it has now become an authoritative foreign language teaching contest with the largest coverage, the most participants, and the greatest ingenuity in China. With the theme of “Smart design: The building of bridge to smart learning, the 2017 “Star Teacher” Contest is aimed at accelerating the development of China and enhancing the international prestige of China through more efficient teaching design, smarter teaching approaches, and better training of international talents. The contest comprising of the first stage, the second stage and the last stage has attracted more than 1,000 teachers from all Chinese colleges and universities. Nearly 500 teachers participated in the second stage of competition and nearly 10,000 teachers watched the competition on the spot. Finally 22 contestants were chosen through the competition at different levels in nearly one year to form the elite group at the final stage of 2017 “Star Teacher” Contest held in Beijing. The finals of the contest contain two parts, that is “Evaluation on the teaching designs” and “On-the-spot competition”, the latter of which is further divided into three links, that is “Briefing the teaching design”, “Demonstrating the classroom instruction”, and “Answering the questions raised by the panelists”. Each contestant gets 15 minutes to do all these. The final score of a contestant is weighted by the the live scoring and voting of the panelists and the audience on the spot.
The performance of JU teachers at the contest displays their potential in English teaching, further enhancing the prestige and influence of JU. The success of Li Chao does honor to both the School of Foreign Languages and Jiangsu University, fully exhibiting the professional capability and solidarity of the whole staff of College English.
