December 8, Professor Wang Lan of Shanghai International Studies University, a vice president of the British Literature Association under the Chinese Association for Foreign Literatures gave a lecture in Z513 titled “International publicity of Shakespeare and its revelation on the globalization of Chinese culture”. Faculties and students from the School of Foreign Languages and TCSOL Department, the School of Liberal Arts attended the lecture presided over by English Department Dean Professor Wu Qinghong.
In her lecture Professor Wang Lang analyzed the gradual canonization of Shakespeare’s works, ascribing the globalization of wonderful literary works to the combined action of both internal and external factors. The external factors include language prestige, comprehensive national potential, cultural soft power, etc. The internal factors include the profound connotation, the insight into human nature, and the beautiful language of a literary work. Finally, Professor Wang Lan called on the audience to bring into full play their professional vantages, to promote the literary classics typical of the Chinese culture, and to apply for a research project that will integrate the popular culture and the elite culture and enhance the “globalization” of the Chinese culture.
After the lecture the speaker went into enthused exchanges with the audience by answering their questions in an instructive and constructive manner.
