On the afternoon of October 25, Deputy Director Ms Gao Shaole of the Investment Promotion Bureau of Yangzhou Biodiverse & Sci-tech City, English interpreter at the Foreign Office of Yangzhou City, delivered a lecture at the “Five Pines Forum” of Jiangsu University held in A205. Her lecture is titled “Experiences of and insights into interpretation of an interpreter from the grassroots”. Deputy Dean Professor Li Chongyue of the School presided over the lecture.
Ms Gao Shaole shared her story of growing up as a foreign affairs interpreter and her insights into translation with more than 100 faculty and students at her lecture. The lecture is divided into three parts: educational experience, experiences of foreign affairs interpretation and rethinking on interpretation after graduation. The foreign affairs interpretation puts a high demand on the political caliber and professional capability of an interpreter. In order to do your interpreting well, she said, you have to accumulate knowledge day by day and make sufficient preparations before taking up a foreign affairs task. A foreign affairs interpreter at work is not as poised as portrayed in the TV play titled “The Interpreter”. The job of an interpreter may be fun at times, but more often than not he or she is helpless when confronted with the great challenge posed by foreign affairs.
Ms Gao Shaole worked for an MA in linguistics and applied linguistics in the School between 2008-2011. She once served as a volunteer of Shanghai World Expo and a volunteer of Nanjing Youth Olympic Games. She has visited 23 countries as the interpreter of Yangzhou Municipal Delegation. She acted as an interpreter (including a simultaneous interpreter) at more than 10 major events, where she met with a number of foreign high officials or political figures.
