On the evening of October 19, Jiangsu University Final of the 2017 “FLTRP Cup” National English Speech Contest was held in No. 1 Lecture Hall of the University’s Meeting Center. Sponsored by the Teaching Affairs Office, Jingjiang College and the School of Foreign Languages of Jiangsu University, the contest was hosted by the Center for International Language Courses at the School of Foreign Languages. Distinguished guests invited to the contest include Teaching & Research General Party Branch Secretary & Teaching Affairs Office Deputy Director Feng Jun, Students’ Affairs Office Director Yang Daojian, Youth League Committee Secretary Wang Limin, School of Foreign Languages Party Committee Secretary Lu Yunsong, Teaching Affairs Office Deputy Director Chen Haibo & Xue Lihong, Jingjiang College Party Committee Deputy Secretary Wu Liping, and Jingjiang College Deputy Dean Sun Guo. The panelists for the final include Dean Chen Hong, Deputy Dean Su Jianhong, Deputy Dean Li Chongyue, Dean Assistant Wu Peng, and foreign faculty Dr. Fran Quattri of the School of Foreign Languages.
The preliminary round of 2017 “FLTRP Cup” National English Speech Contest (Jiangsu University Division) attracted a total of 250 students from different majors. Through fierce rivalry, 32 contestants were selected for the secondary round of competition and eventually 12 for the final. The final contest contained two stages: at the first stage each contestant was required to speak on the given topic of “China, a Global View” in no more than 3 minutes; at the second stage a question was raised by a panelist concerning the speech topic for the contestant to answer within 1 minute. The wonderful speeches delivered by the contestants and the fluency of their oral English won repeated applause from the panelists and the audience. In the end, 6 contestants won a first prize and 4 contestants a special prize. The special prize winners, namely Chang Zhou, Zhou Hailun, Ye Xiaohan and Zhao Xufeng will attend on behalf of Jiangsu University the 2017 “FLTRP Cup” National English Speech Contest for Jiangsu Division to be held in Changzhou. All the other contestants entered for the secondary round won either a second or a third prize. The intervals of the contest were enlivened by the wonderful performances given by faculty and students of the School of Foreign Languages. The performances included reciting an English poem, singing an English song, performing an English play etc. The audience were entertained in a light-hearted manner both visually and acoustically.
The speech contest helps broaden the international vision of JSU students, promote their international quality and create a platform for the motivation of foreign language learners and the cultivation of excellent talents.
