On the morning of October 19, Yao Wei of English Department gave a University-level Business English Writing demonstration lesson to Grade 2014 English majors in A202. The title of her lecture is Letter Writing Situation. A number of faculties from the School of Foreign Languages and others attended the observation teaching with overwhelming responses, saying that they benefited a lot from her lecture.
In her lecture, Yao carried out effective classroom activities through a lively video and audio lead-in, beautifully designed PPT, the best use of a platform of network resources, a novel mobile APP, microlecture, etc. In explaining the text, she transitioned smoothly from one paragraph to another, organized her lecture materials compactly, and included large quantities of information, covering a wide scope of knowledge in and out of the textbook. She gave the whole lecture in fluent and succinct English, revealing the profound meaning in simple words. She combined blackboard writing with the multimedia device and adopted a problem-oriented teaching design to adeptly arouse the attention of her students and effectively enhance their interest. All students concentrated their minds on Yao’s lecture, are actively engaged in classroom activities and Yao’s lecture produced good teaching results in a good classroom atmosphere. As a result, the comprehensive English ability of her students was greatly promoted.
As a compulsory course for the English seniors, Business English Writing plays an important role in expanding the scope of and consolidating students’ professional knowledge. Yao Wei attended the FLTRP “Star Teacher” Contest in the summer vacation of 2017 and won a first prize for teachers of the English Majors. All the participants said Yao’s lecture is very thought-provoking and they held a heated discussion on it after class.
