On the afternoon of October 20, PhD supervisor of English Department, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Dr. William Dezheng Feng visited Jiangsu University and gave a lecture in Z513 titled “Language teaching corpus-based discourse analysis: A case study of teaching materials analysis. The lecture was presided over by Deputy Dean Professor Su Jianhong of the School of Foreign Languages. More than 60 faculty and students of the School attended the lecture.
Based on a language teaching corpus, Dr. Feng’s lecture explores the moral concepts embodied in the English textbooks of Hong Kong, fully displays the paradigm of discourse analysis, analyzes the key points of academic writing, and presents some success cases of interdisciplinary research to faculty and students of the School. His resourceful lecture involves linguistics, pedagogy and visual arts, expounding both the paradigm of discourse research and the core concerns of academic writing. Embedded in metaphorical thinking, the lecture shows an alternative teaching design that will enlighten teachers to deliver abstract and unattractive teaching contents in a lively and interesting manner.
During the Q & A session, Dr. Feng summed up three ways of theoretical innovation: 1. To enhance the precision of and deepen the existing theory; 2. To achieve theoretical development through the combination of interdisciplinary theories; 3.To the achieve maximum efficiency by using multiple theories simultaneously but assigning a task to each according to its function. Feng’s summary shed light on the approach that might be adopted by youth faculty of the School to make theoretical innovation.
In addition, the lecture keeps track of the frontier researches and focuses in linguistics and applied linguistics, expands the scope of discipline development, and puts forward a new idea of interdisciplinary research.
Feng Dezheng is an assistant professor at the Department of English, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His main research fields are multi-modal discourse analysis, cognitive linguistics, language teaching etc. He has published in recent years more than 30 articles in SSCI/A&HCI-indexed journals such as Journal of Pragmatics, Applied Linguistics, Visual Communication, Semiotica, Review of Cognitive Linguistic, Narrative Inquiry, Linguistics and Education, and Critical Arts, as well as prestigious Chinese journals such as Foreign Languages, Contemporary Linguistics, Modern Foreign Languages, Foreign Language World, Foreign Language Research, Foreign Language Teaching, Contemporary Rhetoric, Foreign Language Research (Nanjing). He currently heads or participates in more than 10 projects sponsored by the National Social Science Fund, the Ministry of Education, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Most of his MA and PhD students are devoted to studies on (multimodal) discourse analysis and language teaching.
