On the afternoon of October 18, Professor Feng Jieyun, a PhD supervisor of the University of International Business and Economics gave a lecture in Z513 titled “Rethinking the intercultural communication teaching and research”. Professor Dean Chen Hong, Professor Deputy Dean Li Chongyue, as well as nearly 70 faculty and students of the School of Foreign Languages attended the lecture. Professor Deputy Dean Su Jianhong presided over the lecture.
Professor Feng Jieyun’s lecture is divided into three parts: 1) Self-positioning, self-analysis and curriculum objectives; 2) Innovation in intercultural communication instruction; 3) Research into intercultural communication. She highlighted three consciousnesses (or abilities) in intercultural communication teaching and research: independent thinking, critical thinking and innovative thinking. Then, with concrete examples, she elaborated on the four innovative topics in intercultural communication teaching: how to transcend the IC knowledge system embedded in the dichotomy inherent in western ideology; how to reexamine the western and the Chinese culture independently; how to keep pace with the times by introducing the authentic and plentiful intercultural communication practice of the contemporary era into the intercultural communication teaching; how to discover and sum up valuable points of view in the high-end IC training on the basis of the interaction between teaching and learning.
From the perspective of discourse analysis and the intercultural research in a business context, by citing concrete intercultural examples Professor Feng Jieyun reflected on the social science paradigm prevalent in contemporary intercultural studies, proposing some remedial strategies and expanding our scope of the intercultural communication research under the proposed perspective. Professor Feng’s innovative thinking, problem consciousness and research into the resourceful intercultural practice in China provided a valuable inspiration to the intercultural studies of the School of Foreign Languages, JSU.
