At the end of June 2017, the Joint Party and Administration Meeting of the School of Foreign Languages decided through repeated discussion to found the “Center for International Language Courses, CILC” at the SFL to keep abreast with the initiative of building Jiangsu University into an international “double first-class” university and to meet the ever increasing needs of JSU students for high-end international languages courses. The central objectives of the Center are to concentrate the quality faculties of all School departments to carefully plan and offer courses in close affinity with the internationalized language teaching and examination and in the meanwhile to cultivate a foreign language faculty certified by authoritative international institutions.
The Center is currently developing, offering and administering 5 types of courses: (1) EGAP and EGSP courses to mainly help students on campus who have passed the CET-6 to cultivate their critical academic discussion ability; (2) advanced language skill courses to mainly help students on campus of various disciplines for international exchanges and overseas study, students of talent classes of all kinds and faculties and other students involved to pass international language tests (including the IELTS, the TOEFL, the Cambridge English Certificate, etc.). (3) courses to help JSU faculties to pass the English proficiency tests (say PETS-5); (4) advanced customized courses to help faculties and students on and off campus to enhance their individual foreign language skill (listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating); (5) advanced customized courses to help faculties and students on and off campus to enhance their workplace language communicative ability, argumentative communicative ability and critical thinking ability. Moreover, the Center is in charge of organizing and arranging for students on campus to sit in foreign language contests of all kinds and levels.
All faculties of the Center boast plentiful teaching experiences and a fairly high teaching level, most of whom have won prizes at foreign language contests of all kinds and levels held in China and some of whom stand out in related teaching research fields, have headed projects of the state and the provincial and ministerial level and enjoy certain influence in and out of Jiangsu province. In future work, the Center will take as part of its responsibility to promote the University’s international “double first-class” initiative, highlight the work of cultivating the language ability, thinking ability and intercultural communicative ability of faculties and students on campus, and strive to cultivate international talents with an authentic international vision and foreign language ability for all majors of the University.
