August 10, the 2017 “Star Teacher” Contest sponsored by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press concluded at Hangzhou. 3 faculties of the School of Foreign Languages won honors at the fierce second-round contest. Li Chao and Xin Ying of the Center for International Language Courses, the SFL respectively won a championship and a grand prize for Faculties of College English while Yao Wei of the English Department, the SFL won a first prize for Faculties of English Majors.
With the theme of “Smart design: The building of bridge to smart learning, the 2017 “Star Teacher” Contest is aimed at enhancing the quality of college foreign language teaching, the teaching design ability of faculties, and the professional development of faculties. Divided into 3 stages: smart teaching design, classroom instruction demonstration, and teaching evaluation demonstration, the Contest fully examines the design, teaching and evaluation abilities of English faculties. Li Chao of Jiangsu University chose to lecture on the writing of academic abstract in English. Her detailed analysis of students’ conditions and reasonable setting of teaching objectives rendered her teaching design consummate, succinct and extremely operable. At the stages of classroom demonstration and on-the-spot testing, by well exhibiting her solid teaching skills and innovative teaching notions, Li Chao succeeded in winning the championship with the highest score and got promoted to the final of the year.
In her lecture on the comparative approach to college English writing, Xin Ying combined the online and the offline teaching to offer a smart teaching plan highlight “promoting writing by reading”. By organizing her classroom instruction compactly, delivering her teaching contents smoothly and in succinct and powerful language, she won a grand prize. Yao Wei of the English Department lectured on the consideration principle in business English writing. She adeptly adapted teaching materials and designed colorful teaching activities to arouse the attention of her students. With an effective design of testing questions that examine students’ mastery of knowledge and instant and wonderful explanations to these questions, she won a first prize as well.
The FLTRP “Star Teacher” Contest is a large-scale contest for college English faculties and now the most influential English contest in China. It is jointly undertaken by the Supervisory Committee for College Foreign Language Teaching under the Ministry of Education, the Branch Supervisory Committee for the Teaching of English Majors under the Ministry of Education, the National Supervisory Committee for the MTI Program, the Coordination Group for the Teaching of Translation Majors of the Branch Supervisory Committee for the Teaching of English Majors under the Ministry of Education, the Coordination Group for the Teaching of Business English Majors of the Branch Supervisory Committee for the Teaching of English Majors under the Ministry of Education, and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. Despite their sharply different teaching styles at the Contest, Li Chao, Xin Ying and Yao Wei all demonstrated the grace of the grassroots English teachers of Jiangsu University, doing honor to Jiangsu University by showing the substantial promotion of the teaching quality of the School of Foreign Languages.
