On the morning of May 9, Associate Professor Li Jiajun gave a demonstration lecture titled “Reading Popular Science Articles” in Room 409 of Sanjiang Building. In his lecture design, he integrated the cultivation of popular science article reading skill and intercultural capability into his classroom instruction, trying to cultivate students’ practical capability of English from the perspectives of linguaculture
Professor Li began his lecture with two questions, i.e. “Who is black?” and “What are popular science articles?” before he elaborated on the connection and difference between popular science article and research paper, as well as the textual, syntactic and lexical features of popular science articles. He then expounded the application of top-down reading strategy to reading popular science articles, focusing on the recognition of research findings and research design and the discussion on research results. At the level of cultural teaching, he contrived to cultivate a forthcoming intercultural attitude of students by highlighting the theme of reading material. An international student named Felix from Ghana was invited to report his personal experience of the attitude of Chinese students towards people from other cultural groups.
In his classroom teaching, Professor Li made use of various teaching facilities to combine the “instrumental” and the “humanistic” features of “College English” into an organic whole, fully demonstrating his powerful teaching capability and his perfect command of College English teaching. His lecture was warmly applauded by more than 60 students of his class and more than 20 teachers of the School of Foreign Languages visiting the class. (School of Foreign Languages)
