On the morning of April 28, the demonstration lecture of “Intercultural communication” was given jointly in Z108 for the first time in the School of Foreign Languages by Ms. Zhuang Xiaomin, a Chinese teacher of the English department and a British teacher named Will.
The demonstration lesson titled “Death—a cross-cultural perspective”is mainly aimed at cultivating the intercultural communication. It is rich in contents, logical and lively. In the course of lesson presentation, the Chinese teacher first introduced some hot issues to prompt students to speculate on the subtle and sensitive topic of “death”; then by means of playing a “TED” video she demonstrated the different cultures and customs of death in different countries, meaning to stimulate students to analyze the phenomenon and philosophy of death critically. Towards the end of their lecture, the Chinese and the British teacher jointly elaborated and summarized their teaching contents by applying the intercultural concepts of “stereotypes” and “ethnocentrism”.
Ms. Zhuang Xiaomin is a kernel faculty of the English department, rich in teaching experiences.She has won teaching awards of various kinds at the University and the provincial level. In order to teach the joint lesson well, she has read and studies a lot of papers and monographs on the joint teaching of a lesson by a Chinese and a foreign teacher. In her daily teaching practice, Ms. Zhuang makes efforts to exchanges ideas with foreign teachers regularly on updating teaching notions and accumulating teaching experiences. In this demonstration lesson, the two teachers cooperated harmoniously while the interaction between “teachers and students” and “teacher and teacher”are natural, enthusiastic and frequent. The teaching design, humorous teaching language, and brand-new intercultural perspective of the Chinese teacher guaranteed the success of this demonstrative lesson that highlights the cultivation of both the intercultural competency and the critical thinking competency.
