On December 9, Sichuan International Studies University Level-2 Professor Dong Hongchuan, PhD Supervisor and Jialing Distinguished Professor, delivered an online lecture entitled “Modernism revisited” to the faculty and students of the School of Foreign Languages. The lecture was presided over by Zhang Lin, Deputy Dean of the School of Foreign Languages. More than 60 faculty members and students listened to the lecture in Z513 of the Main Building collectively, with more people attending the lecture individually.
Professor Dong Hongchuan delivered a wonderful lecture with plentiful and pleasing literary knowledge, for he cited examples from the classics and resorted to his own understanding of these works. After a brief introduction to the concept of modernism, Professor Dong expounded the modernist thoughts of Ortega, Lukacs and Eliot from four aspects: The Dehumanization of Art, Modernism and the Mission of Art, Modernism and Tradition, and Modernism and Reality. Towards the end of his lecture, Professor Dong summed up the great significance and limitations of Ortega's modernist thought. During the Q&A session, Professor Dong patiently answered the questions raised by enthused graduates of the School. His lecture was enlightening to the audience, who said they have learned a lot from it.
Dong Hongchuan, PhD/Postdoc, is a PhD supervisor and level-2 professor in English Language and Literature, enjoys the title of Jialing Distinguished Professor, and serves as President of Sichuan International Studies University. He is Editor-in-chief of “Foreign Language and Literature” and “English Studies”, Academic Pacesetter of the English Language and Literature Discipline in the Chongqing Municipality. He concurrently serves as a member of the Teaching and Steering Committee for the English Majors in Colleges and Universities under the Ministry of Education, Vice President of China Translators Association, Vice President of China Association for English-Chinese Comparative Study, President of China Association for Foreign Language Interface Research, Vice President of National Association of British Literature, a member of Chongqing Municipal People’s Government Degree Committee, President of Chongqing Translators Association. He once studied at Sichuan International Studies University, Sichuan University, Beijing Normal University, University of Nottingham, etc. His main research fields include Modern British and American Poetry and Literary Translation. He has chaired several projects sponsored by the National Social Science Fund and the Chongqing Social Science and Philosophy Planning Office. His publications add up to 16 monographs and translations and more than 70 periodical papers. A number of his papers were reprinted in full by the Renmin University Reprints of Newspaper and Periodical Articles. He has won 4 awards for Excellent Philosophy and Social Science Achievement or Teaching Achievement of the provincial or ministerial level. (School of Foreign Languages)
