From 7:30 to 9:00 on the evening of April 7, School of Foreign Languages Deputy Dean Wu Peng made a live lecture entitled “One Body, Two Wings” College English teaching mode exploration and practice oriented towards college ideological and political education” at UNIPUS, an online teaching and research platform sponsored by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. More than 5000 foreign language teachers from college and universities all over China watched the live broadcast.
In his lecture Wu Peng elaborated on the connotation and urgency of “course ideological and political education” and “College English course ideological and political construction”, giving a systematic introduction to the “One Body, Two Wings” College English teaching mode oriented towards college ideological and political education that has been established step by step since 2017 in Jiangsu University (the “body” refers to the promotion of students’ “English comprehensive application ability” while the “two wings” to the promotion of students’ “critical discussion ability” and “intercultural contextual communicative ability”). He highlighted the motivation for, the theoretical speculation on, the exploration process of, and the implementation means and effect of the teaching reform. He also touched on the practical issues concerning the seamless integration of ideological and political educational objective into the core objectives of College English teaching under this teaching mode, as well as the strategies for orientating the classroom instruction towards problems of the present time and the methods for organizing the classroom instruction via critical discussion.
Towards the end of his lecture, Wu Peng answered representative questions raised by the audience. His well-acclaimed lecture further enhanced the popularity and fame of the College English teaching and faculty of Jiangsu University, reinforcing the course ideological and political construction of the University, especially its nationwide model effect of College English course ideological and political construction.
Wu’s lecture constitutes the series public interest courses under the title of “College Foreign Language Course Ideological & Political Education Notion and Practice” sponsored by the UNIPUS during the epidemic period. The overall objective is to promote the ideological and political education capability of the foreign language faculty at large, to cultivate the international vision and patriotism of students, and to accomplish the fundamental task of cultivating talents with moral integrity. Other specialists invited to give lectures together with Wu Peng include Professor Yang Luxin from Beijing Foreign Studies University, Professor Tian Zhaoxia from Nanjing Normal University and Professor Liao Huaying from East China Institute of Technology.
