On the morning of February 20, the School of Foreign Languages held a video conference to make sure the online teaching might start on time and with high quality and to further tamp and tailor the teaching tasks. The whole School administration, deans and deputy deans of all teaching departments, General Office director and the School teaching secretaries attended the meeting presided over by Dean Li Chongyue.
At the meeting each department dean reported their preparedness for and difficulties of online teaching at present. Deputy Dean Wu Peng passed on the gist of the Second Teaching Affairs Meeting of the University. Deputy Dean Zhang Lin put forward requirements for the online teaching of foreign teachers. Deputy Secretary and Deputy Dean Xia Jianru asked each department to make a list of the students unable to attend the online courses as soon as possible, making sure that the information is correct together with the student work staff. Deputy Dean Wang Ying required the Foreign Language Learning Center to provide support to online teaching technologically and in teaching resources.
Finally, Dean Li Chongyue made an important speech to the conferees. He stressed the importance to borrow the past experiences of classroom instruction and the necessity to get accustomed to the new environment of and devices for online teaching quickly. The faculty should consult others for technical support when they have any difficulty. The department deans should shoulder the primary responsibility of inspecting the pre-teaching preparedness. The teaching secretaries should make a schedule in due time for the School leaders to conduct superintendence on online teaching. He also hoped the departments will pool their efforts to develop an “Excellent Online Course” or “MOOC”. The School will give extra support to the development of this course.
Party Committee Secretary Lu Yunsong put forward concrete requirements on the ideological work of online teaching. Firstly, the battle position of ideological work should be fortified by adhering to Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for the New Era and focusing attention on the fundamental task of cultivating talents with high moral standards. Secondly, the classroom is the main venue where students are taught both knowledge and virtues, and it is also the main place for the inculcation of the political and ideological education. We have to make the best of classroom teaching, either offline or online. Thirdly, all faculty members should raise their political stance, strengthening their political consciousness and their responsibility for ideological education. Fourthly, the School should strive to implement “Ten Principles for the Professional Behaviors of College and University Faculty in the New Era”, observe the “Four Rules of Conformity”, and be a “Teacher with Four Virtues”. Fifthly, we should bear in mind our duties and mission of being one of the “Four Pacesetters”, teaching our students to do up their “First Button of Life” appropriately, to fix a right idea of the world, life and social values , to turn the classroom into a theatre for learning scientific theory and propagating the advanced culture of socialism. In a word, in both online and offline teaching, the ideological front must be strictly safeguarded.
In accordance with the requirements of the School on conducting the comprehensive epidemic prevention and control without affecting the development of the School, all departments of the School have made detailed plans at the earliest time on the work during the epidemic prevention and control, so that “the teaching work might be properly done online”, the discipline assessment and degree program application conducted smoothly, and the application for the projects funded by the National Social Science Foundation of China not affected at all. The online teaching of the first academic week is scheduled to start on February 24, and now all faculty and students get prepared for the online teaching.
